HEARTBROKEN – Amy, 9, a loser as her winner’s trophy is denied for being an ‘offcomer’

A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl was left heartbroken after being told she could not claim the trophy she had rightly won.

For each event, a winner was given points, and the child with the most points at the end of the day won an overall prize.

Winning five out of seven events, Amy was the clear champion, but the family had not realised that because she was from Millom and not Foxfield, she was ineligible.

Amy’s father, Darren Hambly, said he was disgusted by the attitude of the organisers, which made his daughter cry.

Mr Hambly, of Devonshire Road, Millom, said: “My wife had actually rung up the week before and asked if it was open to everyone, and she was told it was. The organiser came over and called us offcomers, which I was disgusted at, and Amy wasn’t allowed to win the overall prize because she wasn’t from Foxfield.

“My little girl left in tears, it was more the way she called us offcomers than anything, almost as if it was something to be ashamed of.”

Amy, a pupil at Thwaites School in Millom, has since told her parents that she does not want to go to the fun day next year. She also won the girl’s fell race but was allowed to keep her prize from that event, £17.50.

Mr Hambly said: “She was looking forward to it so much and she was chuffed to bits when she won overall. To come away with nothing was devastating for her.”

Karen Bishop-Miller, the main organiser for the event, said it had not been her who had called the Hamblys “offcomers”.

Mrs Bishop-Miller said: “We apologise if anyone was upset but there were signs up stating that the overall trophy had been donated in memory of a brother and sister from Foxfield, Rebecca and Matthew Rossiter, who died in a tragic car accident a few years ago.”

She said that only children who live in the LA20 postcode area were eligible for the trophy and that a line had to be drawn somewhere.

Mrs Bishop-Miller said: “The signs specifically gave all addresses of children that would be eligible for the trophy, when it says it is for local children, you do have to make a decision as to what local is exactly.”
