North Bend’s swim team took six first-place medals and two second-place trophies at the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A state meet on Saturday in Gresham.
Sweet Home won the boys team title with 83 points, easily ahead of North Bend’s 55. Marist repeated as girls champion with 52 points, while North Bend scored 43.
The Bulldogs won four individual events and two relays and set two meet records.
Kevin Waller broke the meet record in the 200-yard freestyle with his time of 1 minute, 43.52 seconds. He also won the 100 freestyle (48.19).
James Verger repeated as champion in the 500 freestyle (4:49.16) and was fourth in the 200 freestyle.
Matt Johnson was third in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 backstroke.
Waller, Verger and Johnson teamed with Will Winfield to win the 200 freestyle relay and joined Sean Esperance on the runner-up 400 freestyle relay team.
Rachel Heaney had a career day in her final meet for North Bend’s girls, setting the meet record in the 500 freestyle with her time of 5:04.14, also the best time of the day in any of the classifications, and setting a personal best of 57.24 while finishing second in the 100 butterfly.
Heaney also teamed with Kelli Kronsberg, Kelsey Morgan and Mallory Crocker to win the 200 freestyle relay and finish second in the 200 medley relay.
Morgan was fourth in the 200 individual medley and sixth in the 100 breaststroke. Kronsberg was fifth in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 500 freestyle.
Other champions Saturday were Summit’s boys and Crescent Valley’s girls in Class 5A and Grant’s boys and Jesuit’s girls in Class 6A. Willamette and North Eugene took the third- and fourth-place trophies for Class 5A girls.
