Hawthorn Auto Trophy goes to Hamilton
London, England – Lewis Hamilton received the Hawthorn Memorial Trophy on Friday at the Motor Sports Association’s Night of Champions.
The trophy ceremony took place at the Roylan Automobile Club, Pall Mall, and included 150 guests representing the best of British motorsport.
Hamilton received a standing ovation from the crowd and chief executive of the Motor Sports Association, Colin Hilton, said Hamilton has “captured the imagination” of the public.
“His performances have given us a great platform on which to raise the profile and develop the sport in this country,” he said.
The Hawthorn Memorial Trophy recognises the most successful British or Commonwealth driver in the Formula One championship.
It was first presented in memory of Mike Hawthorn, Britain’s first Formula One World Champion in 1958, who died a year after his victory.
Hamilton is the first driver to win the trophy in his maiden year of Formula One and the 18th driver to receive the trophy.
