The Most Coveted Trophies and Awards in Sports

Trophies

Trophy News from ESPN

Kobe Bryant recently said he would rather win an Olympic gold medal than the NBA championship. Was he merely saying what was politically correct before the Olympics? Did he say it only because it sounds better than “I would rather win an Olympic gold medal than lose the NBA championship”? Or does an Olympic gold medal really mean more to him than a professional championship?

Only Kobe knows for sure but what about you? What sporting trophy means the most to you? Of all the things you could win in sports, which would you choose? A Super Bowl ring? The Masters green jacket? The Heisman Trophy? The Cy Young Award? A World Series? A Final Four? There are dozens upon dozens of championships and awards to win, but which would you most want to claim?

Here are a few quick caveats on my rankings:

The form of the award matters. Trophies top plaques, and the bigger the better. After all, you want the damn thing to look impressive in your trophy case.

Names count, too. Awards named in honor of a person (such as the Cy Young) just resonate more than those that, while prestigious, are named something boring and generic like the “MVP award.”

Durability counts. Generally, the longer the award has been around, the more it means.

Baseball Celebrates Roots and Past Trophies

Trophy news from Fort Wayne, IN

Before Wallen Baseball enters its second half-century, the league will take a moment to remember its roots. Wallen will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Diamond No. 2. Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge will attend as a graduate, team sponsor of Motivated Sports and award presenter. He will also be available to sign autographs as the Indians are off that night for the All-Star break.

“That’s where Eric learned to play ball,” said Nina Wedge, Eric’s mother. Wedge, 40, played catcher for regular and travel teams during elementary and middle school. He is one of four Wallen Baseball graduates to be selected in the Major League Baseball draft. A generation before Wedge, Wallen youth were just as devoted to America’s pastime.

With most families having only one car and Fort Wayne a long drive away, however, the kids had no opportunities to play in an organized setting, Itt said. That’s when Sal Madrid stepped in to establish Wallen Baseball in 1958. Madrid had played eight games for the Chicago Cubs in 1947 and settled in Fort Wayne afterward, participating in semiprofessional ball and competing for numerous baseball trophies.

Orem Owlz Win Baseball Trophy

Trophies news from Salt Lake City, UT

McCurdy, Pioneer League president, presented the Orem Owlz owner, Jess Katofsky, with a towering baseball trophy that represented the team’s 2007 championship baseball title on Tuesday. The championship pennant was raised into the center field of Brent Brown Stadium and Katofsky declared that the trophy was finally home.

Following the ceremony was Opening Day as a record crowd of 4,211 watched as the Owlz and Raptors battle into the 13th inning, when Angel Castillo’s long, two-out single to right scored Darwin Perez from third base in the bottom of the 13th to give Orem a 6-5 win and the win.

For McCurdy, president since 1994, Opening Day was another reminder of the health of the league. Seven of McCurdy’s eight teams have refurbished their parks within the past six years.

“I always get a great feeling when I come to the ballpark early,” he said. “Even at the major league level, I get there for infield practice, there’s an energy.”

Westwood Claims Baseball Trophy

Monday, June 16th, 2008

After a 45-year wait, Westwood High baseball can once again lay claim the state championship trophy.

As they had done all postseason long, the Wolverines pitched and slugged their way to yet another win, but this one just happened to come in the MIAA Division 3 state final as Westwood earned the trophy with a 12-6 victory over Frontier at LeLacheur Park.

At 8-8 and needing to win two of their last four games to just qualify for the postseason, the Wolverines went into the postseason with some momentum winning all four. They never lost again, for the most part facing little resistance in their seven-game run through the playoffs for the school’s first championship baseball trophy since 1963.

“It’s amazing, there’s no greater feeling,” said senior catcher Brian Morante, who was 0-for-1 but got on base in three of four plate appearances by walking twice and getting hit by a pitch. “This is something that we’ll remember for the rest of our lives. This is awesome.”
