The St. Marks Catholic Youth Organization eighth grade basketball team deserved trophies this year for a season filled with great efforts.
But they didn’t want them.
Instead, the boys thought it would be best to donate the funds used for trophies and memorabilia to the Washington Township Food Pantry at the Long Valley Presbyterian Church.
The funds–$250 allocated by the church–are given to the coaches for the eighth graders, since it will be their final year playing in the league. This year, however, the players and their parents came together and decided to donate the funds to the food pantry in lieu of trophies.
St. Mark’s will host a banquet on Saturday, March 10 and the boys will be awarded certificates from the food pantry honoring the donation.
Team members include: Jason DiGiralomo, Joseph Fantasia, Nick Malone, Anthony Mandala, James Mazzullo, Liam McLoughlin, Anthony Michalopoulos, Jeffery Millet, Eric Moore, Julian Zinna.

Basketball is an amazing sport and with it comes many rewards. Basketball seems like it’s everywhere these days: children are playing basketball at school, in the park, in the neighborhood driveways and certainly they are seeing it on TV. And it’s not surprising that children and adults both love the game. It’s fast-paced and fun, and the super-tall NBA and WNBA stars seem like superheros to many pint-sized kids. There are many benefits to playing basketball and below are just some of the reasons why you should be encouraging children to follow their hoop dreams:
Physical fitness is the number one benefit. Lots of running and jumping is the name of the game, which means that basketball helps kids build speed, strength and cardiovascular health, not to mention burn calories. And we know how important physical fitness is these days to a child’s daily routine, so what better way to get children into the game than with a game of basketball.
Working as a team and striving for the same goal is an important life skill, too. Plus, when a kid makes a basket, it’s the greatest thing in the world to them. It’s such a confidence builder. Young children don’t care about the score, but when they make a basket, they’ll be sure to run home and tell their parents about it the moment they walk in the door.
And lastly, the social aspect is key, too. Playing in a group is a great way to get children to interact with each other and start socializing. Many friendships are formed over a little game of basketball.
And of course the rewards, programs today reward students with a variety of awards. Check out these great basketball trophies, Basketball Medals and Awards.

The Josten Trophy is a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Virginia, to honor the most outstanding men’s Division III basketball player of the year. The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. The trophy models the Rotary International motto of “Service above Self” by recognizing those who truly fit the ideal of the well-rounded Division III student-athlete. This year’s trophy marks the 13th year the ward has been presented.
McKeehan helped lead his team to a 21-7 record and a share of its second straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) regular season title. He played in all 28 games for the Saints, including 26 starts and led the team in scoring with a 15.6 points per game average. McKeehan also had a team-leading .632 field goal percentage while averaging 4.9 rebounds per game. A solid all-around player, he also was the team leader with 64 assists and 63 steals.
In the classroom, McKeehan carries a perfect 4.00 grade point average with a double major in Economics and Business Finance. Last week he was named the College Division ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men’s Basketball Player of the Year by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Evolution of Basketball Trophies
Remember the days when all you got for winning that intense tournament were dinky basketball medals?
Well, boring now you can say goodbye to boring basketball awards!
Basketball trophies have come a long way! I’m talking about trophies that have bobbleheads, spinning sports balls and movable arms and legs!
Can’t decide which image or design to use for your basketball team? Let them choose! Use a different image insert for each medal! Use a different saying or logo on each trophy! Not one has to be alike!
Want to go with a more formal approach? Get basketball plaques! You can engrave anything you want on them or even insert a photo of your basketball team. Either way, a basketball plaque mounted on a wall is sure to create memories that will last for generations.
Going along with a classy theme, you can get acrylic basketball awards, glass basketball awards and crystal basketball awards. The crystal awards feature a basketball player lasered inside to create an interesting unique 3-D look.
Maybe you don’t want to make a big deal out of a win or even a loss! So you can opt for basketball pins, basketball pins, basketball ribbons, or basketball certificates. This way nobody is forgotten and everyone will have a little souvenir of from the good times or the bad times!
So remember, you shouldn’t have to feel obligated to get basketball trophies & awards for your team, but rather, you should want to! Designing and building a basketball trophy has never been more fun!

Trophy News from ESPN
Kobe Bryant recently said he would rather win an Olympic gold medal than the NBA championship. Was he merely saying what was politically correct before the Olympics? Did he say it only because it sounds better than “I would rather win an Olympic gold medal than lose the NBA championship”? Or does an Olympic gold medal really mean more to him than a professional championship?
Only Kobe knows for sure but what about you? What sporting trophy means the most to you? Of all the things you could win in sports, which would you choose? A Super Bowl ring? The Masters green jacket? The Heisman Trophy? The Cy Young Award? A World Series? A Final Four? There are dozens upon dozens of championships and awards to win, but which would you most want to claim?
Here are a few quick caveats on my rankings:
The form of the award matters. Trophies top plaques, and the bigger the better. After all, you want the damn thing to look impressive in your trophy case.
Names count, too. Awards named in honor of a person (such as the Cy Young) just resonate more than those that, while prestigious, are named something boring and generic like the “MVP award.”
Durability counts. Generally, the longer the award has been around, the more it means.

Trophy News From Australia
RINGWOOD’S Big V Division 2 women’s team locked up top spot on the ladder last week following a 66-46 demolition of Blackburn on Saturday night before backing-up with a 64-62 win over Keilor.
The win over Keilor last Sunday afternoon saw the Lady Hawks claim the Neighbourhood Watch trophy in what may well be a dress rehearsal for the first week of the finals.
Both teams were backing-up from a game the night before and the contest was a tough finals-like arm-wrestle from the start. Neither team was able to lead by more than six points all day while there were 18 lead-changes and scores were tied four times in a game befitting a trophy battle.

Trophies News spotlights the new Carolina Basketball Museum
UNC’s Carolina Basketball Museum, which opened to the public on Jan. 28, features more than 450 pieces of memorabilia and trophies from the celebrated basketball program. The museum cost $3.4 million and covers 8,000 square feet.
The new museum is an upgrade from the much smaller memorabilia and trophy room in the Smith Center, which was used for other sports as well. The only other university with a basketball-only museum is Kentucky.
The trophy room is filled with ACC championship, Final Four and NCAA championship memorabilia. The NCAA Championship trophy case still has room for four more trophies, should UNC win them someday.
The idea was formed roughly five years ago when Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith decided to donate his extensive collection of memorabilia to North Carolina.
“I think that Carolina fans are a pretty passionate group about the basketball team,” said Steve Kirschner, UNC’s associate athletic director for communications and a member of the museum committee. “We’ve been blessed with a great deal of success, both great teams, great players, great coaches. We’ve never had one place where we’ve been able to bring all that together in terms of the memorabilia and the trophies. We have that now with this museum.”

Trophies News spotlights the Goat Trophy college basketball rivalry
Minnesota – St. Olaf College and Carleton College played the first of two games this season to determine if the Knights can maintain possession of the famed Goat Trophy. St. Olaf was the winner of last night’s game, beating Carleton by just 1 point (final score 61-60).
HISTORY OF THE GOAT TROPHY
• In 1914, Endre Anderson, a St. Olaf student (and later Oles coach) fashioned a makeshift goat out of a chair and hung it from the rafters of the St. Olaf gym. He was trying to “get the goat” of the Carleton players. Carleton won that game and claimed the Goat as a trophy. The two teams have traded the “Goat” ever since.
• The team not in possession of the Goat Trophy must be sweep the season series in order to wrest control away from the other team.
• After earning of the “Goat” with two wins in 1958, St. Olaf maintained possession of the trophy until 1989-90 when Carleton prevailed in a pair of close contests. The trophy has resided with Carleton every year since, except the 2002-03 season when the Oles pulled out a pair of overtime victories.
