College Basketball Trophy Season

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

It’s finally here!  March Madness is what every dyed-in-the-wool collegiate basketball fan lives for.  Filling out the brackets for the office pool has become an annual ritual that most every office participates in (whether they admit to it or not).  While the men’s NCAA Tournament is the biggie, there are still other basketball tournaments that draw considerable interest and also have beautiful basketball trophies to award.

The Men’s NCAA  Division I Tournament is divided into four regions, East, West, Southeast and Southwest.  Each region will award a Championship Trophy and a Runner-Up Trophy.  Plus, each region will award an MVP Trophy to the most outstanding player in that region’s tournament.  Then, the remaining four teams will square off for the coveted Collegiate National Championship Trophy.   The men’s Most Outstanding Player award for the entire tournament is named the Oscar Robertson Award, after the one and only “Big O”.  The women’s Division I Tournament follows the same format, is similarly divided into regions, and will award the same trophies to the teams and a Most Outstanding Player Award to someone on the winning team.

Then there is the NIT (National Invitation Tournament) post-season event that traditionally has its semi-final and final round played at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  Originally, this was the tournament to determine the collegiate national champion.   But, in 2005, the NCAA purchased the rights to the tournament and the NIT lost some of it’s luster as the preeminent post-season hoops event.  Nonetheless, teams are honored to participate, and value winning the trophies associated with this tournament to highlight a successful season.

College Hoops – Most Outstanding Player Trophy

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

It’s that time of year again…March Madness is ready to strike again! Often overlooked during the craziness of office pools and excitement of the tournament is the trophy given to the most outstanding collegiate player in the country. Presented by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), the Player of the Year Award has been awarded since 1959, and is considered to be the oldest award of it’s kind. The Player of the Year Award was renamed The Oscar Robertson Trophy in 1998 one of the most basketball favorite trophies.

Oscar Robertson, The Big O, first gained national attention at the University of Cincinnati where he lead the Bearcats to the Final Four in 1959 & 1960. After graduating, he was a co-captain of the 1960 U. S. Olympic Team that went undefeated and is widely considered to be the greatest basketball team ever assembled. His 14 year pro career was highlighted by being a twelve time NBA all star, and is the all time leader in triple double games (season and career) and in rebounds by a guard. For his achievements in both college and professional basketball, Robertson was named “Player of the Century” by the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 2000. Since retiring from the NBA, Robertson has excelled off the court in business and philanthropic endeavors including the NBA Legends Foundation, the Boys Club of New York, and the National Kidney Foundation.

In 1997 The Big O performed the assist of a lifetime when he donated a kidney to his daughter Tia, who was suffering from lupus. For a college player to receive a trophy named after Oscar Robertson is not only an honor for his college basketball trophies and achievements, but something that the young man should aspire to live up to for a lifetime.

Duke adds more trophies

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Duke has some additions to make to their new basketball trophy shrines thanks to their performances in the ACC tournament.

The Blue Devils now have the problem of finding more space for their latest trophy. Not a bad problem to have.

Duke won its 19th ACC men’s basketball championship and the trophy that goes with it, trouncing the Tar Heels 75-58 Sunday, at the Greensboro Coliseum.

In the 58-year history of the ACC basketball tournament, no team has been honored with more trophies than Duke.

Basketball Trophies, Medals and Awards

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

Basketball is an amazing sport and with it comes many rewards. Basketball seems like it’s everywhere these days: children are playing basketball at school, in the park, in the neighborhood driveways and certainly they are seeing it on TV. And it’s not surprising that children and adults both love the game. It’s fast-paced and fun, and the super-tall NBA and WNBA stars seem like superheros to many pint-sized kids. There are many benefits to playing basketball and below are just some of the reasons why you should be encouraging children to follow their hoop dreams:

Physical fitness is the number one benefit. Lots of running and jumping is the name of the game, which means that basketball helps kids build speed, strength and cardiovascular health, not to mention burn calories. And we know how important physical fitness is these days to a child’s daily routine, so what better way to get children into the game than with a game of basketball.

Working as a team and striving for the same goal is an important life skill, too. Plus, when a kid makes a basket, it’s the greatest thing in the world to them. It’s such a confidence builder. Young children don’t care about the score, but when they make a basket, they’ll be sure to run home and tell their parents about it the moment they walk in the door.

And lastly, the social aspect is key, too. Playing in a group is a great way to get children to interact with each other and start socializing. Many friendships are formed over a little game of basketball.

And of course the rewards, programs today reward students with a variety of awards. Check out these great basketball trophies, Basketball Medals and Awards.

2010 World Series Teams

The New York Giants

Since their move from New York City to San Francisco before the 1958 season, the Giants and their fans have endured seasons of futility and disappointment. The last World Series win for the Giants was in 1954 against the Cleveland Indians. Since the move, The Giants made it to the World Series three times since the 1958 relocation, but lost each time. The Giants played and lost to the Florida Marlins in their last NLDS appearance in 2003, and the Marlins were the eventual World Series champs.

In this year’s Division Series, the Giants played the Atlanta Braves. and won the series three games to one. Playing the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS, they were heavy underdogs as the Phillies were the two-time defending National League champions. Their win over the Phillies was the first time that the NL West champion made it to the World Series since 2001.

The Texas Rangers

The Rangers franchise and their fans also were long suffering for success. This team started out in 1961 as the Washington Senators, and had ten out of eleven losing seasons while there. In 1972, the team moved to Arlington, Texas, and did not participate in post season play for over 20 years.

In the 2010 ALDS, The Rangers squared off against the top-seeded Tampa Bay Rays. They split the first four games before the Rangers won decisively in game five. This was the first divisional series win in franchise history. Additionally, the Rangers were the last team that had never won a post season series.

Up against the New York Yankees in the ALCS, the Rangers faced a team that they had never beaten in three post season appearances. By closing out the Yankees in six games, Rangers reached their first World Series in team history. It also marks the first time since 1991 that the AL West champion has won the pennant.

The 2010 World Series

This year was the 106th Major League Baseball World Series. The playoff between the American League champion Texas Rangers and the National League champion San Francisco Giants for baseball’s Commissioner’s Trophy was a best of seven game series. The Giants won the series and this coveted trophy 4-1 on November 1. This was their first World Series championship since 1954, and their first since relocating to San Francisco from New York City in 1958.

The Champion’s Commissioner’s Trophy

Unlike hockey’s Stanley Cup that is passed yearly from champion to champion, a newly created Commissioner’s Trophy is presented each year. This baseball champion’s trophy was first awarded in 1967 to the St. Louis Cardinals. Since 1967, the Commissioner’s Trophy has been awarded every year except 1994 when a season ending players’ strike forced cancellation of the entire post season. The New York Yankees, with their seven World Series wins, have won the most Commissioner’s Baseball Trophies. In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds are tied for the most trophies won with three wins apiece.

Trophy Design

The current Commissioner’s Baseball Trophy is made by Tiffany & Co., and is worth approximately $15,000. Excluding the base, the trophy is 24 inches tall, and is 11 inches in diameter. Being made of sterling silver, it weighs approximately 30 pounds. The highlight of this striking trophy is 30 gold-plated flags, one for each of the Major League teams. These flags rise above a silver baseball covered with latitude and longitude lines that symbolize the world. The stitching on the baseball is pure Tiffany, being done in 24-karat vermeil. The signature of the commissioner is inscribed on the base, along with “Presented by the Commissioner of Baseball”. This is a new design, and was presented for the first time to the winning New York Yankees at the conclusion of the 2000 World Series.

This baseball trophy is truly one of a kind, and emblematic of the skills necessary to make it through a long season, playoffs and the winning of the World Series.

Lakers take game 7 by a thread

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Well the LA pulled it off in game seven beating the Celtics in the fourth by a thread. You would have thought there were multiple trophies on the line the way the Lakers turned up the heat in the last minutes.

The Lakers pulled off one of the most unlikeliest run for the trophy ever.

I guess what ever Phil Jackson touches turns to gold has he is the three peat king!

About 28.2 million people watched the Lakers take Game 7, 83-79, and march off with the team’s 16th championship, according to the Nielsen ratings service. It was the biggest audience to watch a deciding game since 35.9 million tuned in to watch Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls beat the Utah Jazz in 1998.

NBA’s Joe Dumars Sportsmanship Trophy

Monday, May 24th, 2010

When Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen joined Paul Pierce in Boston to create the Big Three, the only  obstacle to their success seemed to be a possible lack of chemistry in the locker room. Put three alpha dogs in the same room, and trouble can arise.

But everything worked out for the Celtics.

Garnett was the fiery, emotional one while Allen chose to lead by example. The shooting guard’s quiet leadership and respect for the game has earned him praise across the league. Earlier this month, Allen won the Atlantic Division’s sportsmanship award and finished third for the NBA honor.

This kind of recognition is nothing new for Allen, who captured the NBA’s Joe Dumars Trophy (named after its inaugural recipient) during the 2002-03 season while a member of the Seattle SuperSonics. Phoenix’ Grant Hill won this season’s sportsmanship award ahead of Chauncey Billups, Allen and Antawn Jamison.

Four of the six divisions were won by players who have spent over a decade in the league, and they were the leading four vote-getters in the sportsmanship balloting. Sixth-place finisher Luis Scola has only spent three years in the United States but has been playing professional basketball across the world since 1996. Only Atlanta youngster Al Horford, who finished fifth, hasn’t been around the block for long.

No Celtic has ever won the award before, though P.J. Brown, a member of the 2008 Celtics championship team, was honored in 2003-04 as a member of the New Orleans Hornets.

For Hill, the Dumars Trophy is his third. He also won with the Suns in 2007-08 and the Magic in 2004-05. Billups was honored in 2008-09, the season between Hill’s two most recent trophies.

Jostens Trophy Finalist

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

The Josten Trophy is a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Virginia, to honor the most outstanding men’s Division III basketball player of the year.  The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service.  The trophy models the Rotary International motto of “Service above Self” by recognizing those who truly fit the ideal of the well-rounded Division III student-athlete.  This year’s trophy marks the 13th year the ward has been presented.

McKeehan helped lead his team to a 21-7 record and a share of its second straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) regular season title.  He played in all 28 games for the Saints, including 26 starts and led the team in scoring with a 15.6 points per game average.  McKeehan also had a team-leading .632 field goal percentage while averaging 4.9 rebounds per game.  A solid all-around player, he also was the team leader with 64 assists and 63 steals.

In the classroom, McKeehan carries a perfect 4.00 grade point average with a double major in Economics and Business Finance.  Last week he was named the College Division ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men’s Basketball Player of the Year by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Evolution of Basketball Trophies

The Evolution of Basketball Trophies

Remember the days when all you got for winning that intense tournament were dinky basketball medals?

Well, boring now you can say goodbye to boring basketball awards!

Basketball trophies have come a long way! I’m talking about trophies that have bobbleheads, spinning sports balls and movable arms and legs!

Can’t decide which image or design to use for your basketball team? Let them choose! Use a different image insert for each medal! Use a different saying or logo on each trophy! Not one has to be alike!
Want to go with a more formal approach? Get basketball plaques! You can engrave anything you want on them or even insert a photo of your basketball team. Either way, a basketball plaque mounted on a wall is sure to create memories that will last for generations.

Going along with a classy theme, you can get acrylic basketball awards, glass basketball awards and crystal basketball awards. The crystal awards feature a basketball player lasered inside to create an interesting unique 3-D look.

Maybe you don’t want to make a big deal out of a win or even a loss! So you can opt for basketball pins, basketball pins, basketball ribbons, or basketball certificates. This way nobody is forgotten and everyone will have a little souvenir of from the good times or the bad times!

So remember, you shouldn’t have to feel obligated to get basketball trophies & awards for your team, but rather, you should want to! Designing and building a basketball trophy has never been more fun!
