Trophy Haul for Mangogsfield Cheer Squad

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

A cheerleading squad from Mangotsfield is celebrating after picking up a clutch of trophies at a national competition.

The girls from the Phoenix Allstars walked away with nine major prizes from the British Cheerleading Association’s Midland Classics competition, which was held in Telford. But the prize the dancers were most proud of was the award for sportsmanship, which they were nominated for from more than 20 squads.

The Allstars – 70 girls between the ages of four and 21 led by coaches Miranda Burn, Emma Fox, Lottie Wilmott and Steve Offer – put in hours of training in the lead-up to the competition for the trophies, sometimes practicing for up to 24 hours a week at Mangotsfield School.
More than 100 squad members and their parents went to the competition, and teams from all of the Allstars age groups took part, including the minis, pee-wees, youth, junior and senior age group teams.

On the first day squads competed in cheerleading stunt routines, which included “basket tossing” – throwing cheerleaders through the air – and making human platforms.
On the Sunday they took part in pom-pom competitions and hip-hop dancing, again picking up an array of awards. The Telford competition saw the Allstars unveil their new mascot, Phoebe Allstar, who supported the cheerleaders throughout the weekend and won the mascot dance-off.

Kate Hooper, who helps co-ordinate the Allstars and is mum to dancers Freya, four, and Maisie, seven, said the squad were very proud of their achievements.

Hartlepool Hawks Win 58 Cheer Trophies

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Talented cheerleaders flew the flag for Hartlepool by winning an incredible 58 trophies at a national event. The youngsters who make up the Hartlepool Hawks cheerleading academy swooped to success in Blackpool at the annual International Championships. The team won every single category they entered, and left the seaside resort with an impressive 15 national titles.

Children as young as four were joined by the more experienced Hawks aged up to 19 at the elite competition held at Norbreck Castle, in Blackpool. A total of 45 competitors were joined by more than 50 supportive parents and coaches who made the trip to Blackpool. And they made the trip back across to Hartlepool proudly showing off 58 trophies.

Head coach Rebecca Taylor said: “We never expected that we would be coming home with that many trophies. “The standard was extremely high so for us to go there and perform so well was fantastic.” Rebecca, 21, said all of the Hawks worked extremely hard in preparation for the event. She added: “They were very proud of themselves and so they should be. To win 58 trophies at a national event is brilliant.”

The town cheerleaders excelled in a range of solo and team categories including pom, jazz and tumbling. The excellent performances at Blackpool were another boost for the cheerleaders and coaches. The club was only formed a little over a year ago but has already established itself on the national cheerleading scene.

It isn’t just on the floor where the members have been working hard. In recent months the club has also set up a number of events raising money to fund new specialist equipment.

It was back to the practice gym for the Hawks after their performances in Blackpool.
More than 50 of the youngsters are now preparing for a trip to Swindon for a competition later this month.

Sandburg, Rich Central Win Cheerleading Trophies

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

In the six years leading up to the state cheerleading finals Saturday, the south suburbs garnered championship trophies in every season. This year was no different, reaffirming the area as a competitive cheerleading authority with two state champions and eight top-10 finishers spread over three divisions. Sandburg, coming off a fourth-place finish last season, claimed its third title in the large-team category. Rich Central secured its first in the coed division.

“Every state title is a phenomenal feeling,” Sandburg coach Michael Bruce said. “It’s been a different group of kids for each one, and we just feel so happy each kid has gotten their time on top.”

Sandburg recognized many familiar faces in the finals, with Lockport finishing second, Marist third, Providence Catholic fourth and Lincoln-Way East sixth. Joliet West, which finished second in the Southwest Suburban Conference behind Sandburg, placed seventh.

“The south suburbs, like our conference, is great,” Bruce said. “We know we’re going to get tough competition throughout the season. We feel [the competition] brings the best out of us, and we bring the best out of them.”

While Sandburg is accustomed to hoisting championship cheer trophies, Rich Central now can join the fun. The Olympians ranked second behind Grant with 88.14 points after the preliminaries Friday, but they managed to tighten up their routine for the finals. The Olympians performed with no deductions Saturday to secure a state title with 91 points. Their near three-point bump in score was the highest of any championship team from preliminaries to the finals.

The Texas Flip Factory Flyers finished their second season by adding several trophies to the wall of the Humble gym.

“All of our teams were amazing. We are so impressed with the dedication of the athletes and how much all of the teams improved. The orange-clad group won a parent participation award from Cheer Power” said owner Kris Williams. All three teams boasted impressive wins at competitions throughout the state of Texas. The junior team, the Nighthawks, won first place at four of their seven competitions and the youth team placed in the top tier for all of their competitions.

“I really can’t say enough about our youngest squad, the Red Barons. They wow the crowd every time they take the mat,” Williams said. The Red Barons, ages 3 to 5, have already learned running tumbling passes and some impressive stunting skills.

“We’ve got a great group of young cheerleaders who improve everyday. Our coaches are able to work with them individually and the results are extremely impressive,” said Williams.

The Flip Factory Flyers are coached by former Humble High School and University of Houston cheerleader Geni Cox. As head coach, Cox oversees a staff of five coaches and all aspects of the cheer and tumbling program.

Shawn Sartain recently joined the TFF coaching staff. As a former Humble High School cheerleader, Sartain offers immeasurable experience in both tumbling and cheer. (more…)

Trophy news from North Attleboro, MA…
High school squad takes home two trophies

North Attleboro High School cheerleaders really have something to cheer about.

The high school’s competition cheerleading team took home a first-place award and the grand champion trophy Saturday for the second time in two weeks.

The squad, which is coached by Patti Johnson and Julie George, competed at Holy Name High School in Worcester, cheering their way to a first-place finish in their division. The team was also awarded the grand champion trophy for earning the highest score of all teams competing that day – regardless of division.

A total of 19 teams competed in the event, with teams arranged in different divisions. North Attleboro competed in the Division 2 Varsity group.

The win was familiar territory for the team, which had the same outcome at David Prouty High School in Spencer the week before.
The team’s next competition will be 1 p.m. Saturday at North Attleboro High School, when it will compete for the Hockomock title.

Trophies

Trophy News from ESPN

Kobe Bryant recently said he would rather win an Olympic gold medal than the NBA championship. Was he merely saying what was politically correct before the Olympics? Did he say it only because it sounds better than “I would rather win an Olympic gold medal than lose the NBA championship”? Or does an Olympic gold medal really mean more to him than a professional championship?

Only Kobe knows for sure but what about you? What sporting trophy means the most to you? Of all the things you could win in sports, which would you choose? A Super Bowl ring? The Masters green jacket? The Heisman Trophy? The Cy Young Award? A World Series? A Final Four? There are dozens upon dozens of championships and awards to win, but which would you most want to claim?

Here are a few quick caveats on my rankings:

The form of the award matters. Trophies top plaques, and the bigger the better. After all, you want the damn thing to look impressive in your trophy case.

Names count, too. Awards named in honor of a person (such as the Cy Young) just resonate more than those that, while prestigious, are named something boring and generic like the “MVP award.”

Durability counts. Generally, the longer the award has been around, the more it means.

Trophies News from Rhode Island

On December 8th in Orlando, Fla., the Pee Wee Knights of Greenwich trounced their opponents to capture first place in their division — and a nearly 5-foot-tall trophy — in the American Youth Football and Cheer National Championships. (The trophy had to be taken apart so it could fit on the plane.)

The Knights Pee Wees are in Division 12, ages 10 to 12; they are one of three Knights teams, part of the Blackstone Valley Youth Football and Cheerleading Conference. This league includes competitors from Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.

They weren’t the only Rhode Island competitors to bring home honors. The Central Falls Panthers Midgets, a Division 15 team, captured third place in its division.
