Heisman Trophy to be in Green Valley on Thursday

The Heisman Trophy, which will be presented to this year’s best college football player, will be on display at Cole Nissan on Thursday from 8:30 a.m.- 7 p.m. The 25-pound Heisman Trophy will be in Green Valley as part of ESPN’s two-month Gridiron Blowout Trophy Tour.

Laval quarterback Benoit Groulx Quebec nominee for Hec Crighton Trophy

LENNOXVILLE, Que. — Laval Rouge et Or quarterback Benoit Groulx won the Jeff Russel Trophy as the Quebec conference’s player of the year on Monday.

The Montreal native also becomes one of the four nominees for the Hec Crighton Trophy as the top player in Canadian university football, which will be awarded Nov. 20, two days ahead of the Vanier Cup trophy in Hamilton.

The Top Cat Trophy — sponsored by the Times-Journal and the Scottsboro Daily Sentinel — also changed hands in Fort Payne’s first loss to Scottsboro (5-4, 4-3) in four years in the 73rd meeting between the two teams. Scottsboro clinched the region’s final playoff spot with the win.

Buzz up! The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame has announced that Louisiana Tech’s senior linebacker Quin Harris has been selected as a semifinalist for this season’s Draddy Trophy, presented by HealthSouth.

“The Draddy Trophy is one of college football’s most sought after and competitive awards,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning whose sons Peyton (Draddy winner) and Eli were named NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively.

Here’s the release:

Cal senior linebacker Zack Follett was chosen as the Lott Trophy IMPACT Player of the Week presented by Wachovia on Wednesday for his efforts against Washington State last Saturday.

Follett scored on a 65-yard return of a blocked field goal, had a sack and another tackle for loss in Cal’s 66-3 conference road win over the Cougars. Cal will receive $1,000 for its general scholarship fund in recognition of Follett’s performance.
