Minnesota faces Michigan this Saturday for Little Brown Jug trophy
This Saturday’s game between Minnesota and Michigan will be the first of Minnesota’s three trophy games this year. The Gophers will try to win back the “Little Brown Jug.” The “Little Brown Jug” is the most famous of all football rivalry trophies.
This football trophy game dates back to 1903 and a contest between the Gophers and Wolverines in Minneapolis. Michigan was the favorite and had won 28-straight games leading to their matchup with the Gophers. When Minnesota scored a second-half touchdown to tie the game at 6-6, the 20,000-plus fans stormed the field, causing the game to be called with two minutes on the clock. The following morning, the Minnesota equipment manager found an earthenware water jug and painted the score on it. Michigan sent a letter asking for the jug to be returned and Minnesota wrote back that they would have to win it back…so began the legend of the Little Brown Jug trophy.
Other Trophy Rivalries on Minnesota’s schedule:
Minnesota will battle Iowa for “Floyd of Rosedale” on Nov. 10 in Iowa City, then take on Wisconsin in the annual battle for “Paul Bunyan’s Axe” on Nov. 17 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
