A new trophy case at Berkley High School that holds once moth-balled testaments to past sports triumphs is an achievement in itself. Built by senior Nathan Vertel, 17, with $2,000 he raised from bottle drives, 500-man hours went into the three sets of oak shelves for his Eagle Scout project. Also an athlete, Nathan said he was surprised to learn teams had won dozens of trophies that couldn’t be displayed because there wasn’t enough room. That gave him an idea for a community service project to get him into elite ranks of the Boy Scouts of America. He would custom design and build more trophy cases.
About 30 trophies stored in a gym closet were “cycled,” Nathan said of the awards put on and taken off display periodically. “My cases will be for the trophies that took a season to earn versus the participation kind,” said Nathan, who plays soccer, rugby and football.
He got approval from Paul Yowchuang, the athletic director at the time, and then looked for help from the community. Younger Scouts joined the effort, collecting about 20,000 bottles and cans to raise money for supplies. Nathan’s father, Larry Vertel, his brother Jacob Vertel, who is also an Eagle Scout, and neighbor Michael Plaskey also pitched in.
Plaskey let Nathan build the cases at his business, Finish Line Closeouts, Warren, and helped him get supplies at cost. Robin Wernick, an assistant scoutmaster, offered guidance with construction.
“I had only built a birdhouse and a tool box before this,” Nathan said. “I was surprised at how precise every measurement had to be.”
Nathan’s mother, Sandie Vertel, said she is proud on many levels from the planning stage, to the bottle drive and the construction. To collect the returnables, Nathan passed out 4,000 fliers and appealed to almost everyone in Berkley. “He demonstrated true leadership and maturity,” Vertel said. She also is impressed with her son for accomplishing his goal while keeping up with his other activities, including a Daily Tribune paper route. “He is one of the last of the kid carriers,” Vertel said.??A Scout since he was in first grade at Berkley’s Pattengill Elementary School, Nathan now is a member of Royal Oak’s Boy Scout Troop 1610. He recently presented the three trophy cases to Berkley High School.??“Teachers, students and friends tell me or text me that they look really good,” Nathan said. “It feels surreal to be done with them after months of work.”
When he receives his Eagle Scout ranking, Nathan will join an exclusive group of the highest ranked scouts. In 2010, 56,176 Scouts achieved the rank of Eagle. Eagle Scouts must earn 21 merit badges, serve in a leadership capacity within their troops, plan and implement a service project and successfully complete a board of review.

Trophies have been used to signify some sort of victory since ancient times. In fact, the modern word “trophy” originated from the Greek word tropaion, which is derived from the verb meaning “to rout.” In ancient Greece, the first trophies reflected wartime victories. These were erected on the battlefield where the enemy had been defeated. These first battlefield trophies were fabricated from captured arms and standards and were placed on a large stake or hung on a tree. They were made to resemble the figure of a warrior, and were inscribed with details of the battle and dedicated to a god or gods. Naval trophies followed the same pattern of construction. They were constructed of entire ships (or what remained of them), and laid out on the nearest beach to the conquest. The deliberate destruction of one if these wartime trophies was considered a sacrilege since it was given in thanks and tribute to a god.
The ancient Romans kept their trophies closer to home. Instead of a tribute to the victors and gods in the vicinity of the victory, the Romans had their commemorative trophies constructed in Rome. These trophies were often magnificent, and included columns and arches atop a foundation. Outside Rome, there are huge stone memorials that were originally crowned with sculpted stone trophies…remnants of these trophies from long ago.
There is little knowledge about awards of trophies given during the Middle Ages. However, in the New World, chalices, or two-handled cups, were given to winners of sporting events as early as at least the very late 1600s. An exquisite example of this is a small two-handled sterling cup in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, that was given to the winner of a short horse race between two towns in New England about 1699. It’s named the and is called the Kyp Cup as it was fabricated by silversmith Jesse Kyp . Chalices were primarily associated with sporting events, and were typically made in silver. They were awarded in horse racing, boating and early automobile racing. Sporting awards still often take the form of a cup, including the Davis Cup, a major tennis trophy first awarded in 1900, the Stanley Cup, given to National Hockey League champs (1894), and the World Cup, given since 1967 to top male and female alpine skiers, to name a few.

Rhinos captain aims for clean sweep
Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield has declared a clean sweep of all competitions as his side’s target for the season.
The Rhinos are attempting to win an unprecedented third consecutive Super League title, as well as a second straight World Club Challenge. Sinfield has also set his sights on victory in the Challenge Cup.
“We want all the trophies. The Challenge Cup is something that has eluded me in my career and it’s something I’m desperate to get my hands on but no more than the Super League trophy,” he said.
“The success we’ve had has spurred us on for more. It gets better every year and to be part of what we have experienced at Old Trafford again would be something special. (more…)

Trophy News from New Zealand…
The Reactor’s Trophies Hall of Fame Bound

Former New Zealand Member of Parliament and president of the New Zealand Trotting Hall Of Fame, Gilbert Myles, is overwhelmed with the continued generosity displayed by the owners of pacing champion Auckland Reactor.
Just a couple of weeks after announcing it will donate 10 per cent of Auckland Reactor’s winnings at the three Cambridge meetings on January 2, 9, and 16 to the Waikato Hospice, the owners of the brilliant Mach Three 4-year-old have now agreed to donate all of his winning trophies (from the November 28 Franklin Cup on) to the Alexandra Park based Hall Of Fame.
“This is an absolutely amazing gesture. What a wonderful thought. The owners of Auckland Reactor need to be applauded for this. John Curtin is doing an absolutely brilliant marketing job with this horse. He is a true ambassador of the sport not only here but world-wide,” Myles said.
Curtin, of JC International, is a prominent standardbred agent in both the northern and southern hemispheres. He has a small share in Auckland Reactor and was only too pleased to have the champion’s trophies on display in the Hall of Fame. (more…)

Trophy News from WalesOnline.co.uk……
Shane Bids To Add To His Great Trophy Haul

SHANE WILLIAMS is planning to add to his magnificent seven collection of trophies in 2008 by lifting the elusive the Heineken Cup next spring.
The “Great Entertainer” has won a stream of accolades following an amazing year.
Wales picked up the Six Nations title; the Triple Crown for beating England, Scotland and Ireland; and the James Bevan Trophy following their memorable 20-15 triumph over Tri-Nations runners-up Australia at the Millennium Stadium 11 days ago.
His region the Ospreys went into the year as Magners League champions, but lost that title to crack Irish province Leinster.
However, Welsh rugby’s big spenders got some consolation for losing their hold on the Celtic crown and bombing out of the Heineken Cup following a stunning upset against English outfit Saracens at Vicarage Road by walloping Leicester Tigers in the Twickenham-held final of the Anglo-Welsh EDF Energy Cup.
And Shane has bagged another three of his own. He was overwhelming winner of the public vote to find the Six Nations player of the tournament, was named International Rugby Board player of the year and, earlier this week, BBC Wales sports personality of the year. (more…)

Trophy news from Taunton, MA…..
Trophy life

Trophies are treasured prizes — whether bestowed on professional athletes who have just helped their team win a national championship or presented to a youth soccer player who showed up for every game and played his heart out. Corporate executives and third-grade spelling bee winners alike gratefully receive these awards and proudly display them in their offices or bedrooms at home.
“People like to be recognized for their accomplishments, what they’ve done in the workplace or on the playing field and other avenues,” says Jay Stelmach, the maker of monuments and owner of Colonial Trophy in Lakeville.
The family owned and operated business first opened in Taunton in 1955 and has been at its current location next to Mucky’s Liquors on Route 44 since 1968.
Stelmach offers a huge selection of trophies, plaques, medals and other commemorative items for a vast variety of sports and activities. Trophies for every major sport are available and if it’s not, Stelmach takes special orders.
“I had a guy today pick up 15 cricket trophies for his cricket club, and we’ve done trophies for a chicken show, pigeon racing, stuff like that,” he says. (more…)
