2007 NCAA Football Heisman’s Trophy

Trophy News From Simi Valley, CA

Winning the Heisman Trophy does not guarantee a college football player a long and successful pro career, although every football player would love the bronze statue displayed on their mantle. Even if they do not have a successful career, they could use it like O.J. did as collateral to help pay off civil penalties.

Magic of the cup as Dragons get their hands on old trophy

CHRISTMAS came early to Wrexham’s Colliers Park training ground yesterday, but manager Dean Saunders insists there will be no gifts on offer for FA Cup trophy minnows Eastwood Town.

Members of the Dragons squad queued up to get their hands on the FA Cup trophy – which was brought to Wrexham by the tournament sponsors – and they later donned Santa Claus outfits to publicise a forthcoming fund-raising fun run in aid of Hope House children’s hospice.

Happy though he was to co-operate with both stunts, Saunders – an FA Cup trophy winner with Liverpool in 1992 – said it would be business as usual as the Dragons bid to overcome their Unibond Premier League opponents to book a first-round spot.

“We want to go as far as we can in the competition and I’m looking at this game as one we should win,” he added.

“There’s nothing else on my mind and I expect us to play the way we have been since I came into the club.”

A hat-trick of victories since Saunders took over from Brian Little have seen Wrexham climb the Blue Square Premiership league table.

But Saunders must make at least two changes from the side that beat Mansfield 2-1 last weekend.

Defender Mike Williams, who scored at Field Mill but was later concussed, has been ruled out and loan signing Joe Allen has returned to Swansea City for treatment to an ankle ligament injury sustained in training on Tuesday.

But full-back Carl Tremarco should be available for selection, while striker Jefferson Louis – missing last Saturday with a hamstring strain – returned to training only yesterday.

Saunders said: “Jefferson is touch and go, but, with us winning three games, it’s a lot easier to pick the team than if we had lost all three.

“But if our attitude is not right we will suffer, so I want everybody to show our fans that they are fully committed when they are wearing a Wrexham shirt.

“The players should feel lucky to be in such a position.”

Underlining his determination to guide Wrexham through to Monday’s first-round draw, Saunders added: “I won the cup with Liverpool and I had the unfortunate experience of playing for Swansea as a young player when we got knocked out by Bognor Regis after a replay.

“I didn’t like that feeling and you’d better believe it was infinitely better going to Wembley with Liverpool.

“There’s a potential upset at the Racecourse and we have to make sure it doesn’t happen.

“We might have to show the ugly side of the game against Eastwood. It’s easy to say we’ll work hard, but we have to do it when we are tired as well.

“It’s easy to give up and it’s a really big game for Eastwood. I’m sure they will have prepared well and so we know what to expect.

“We have to defend properly, make sure there are no silly mistakes or sendings-off and ensure that we are totally professional.

“We need to match whatever they throw at us and, that being the case, I’d like to think the talented players we have will produce something for us.”

Eastwood manager Paul Cox said: “Nobody is giving us any chance of winning, so the pressure is well and truly off the players.

“It’s a great draw for us and we’ll give it our best shot.”

HANLON HOPING FOR MORE TROPHY GLORY

HANLON HOPING FOR MORE TROPHY GLORY

It doesn’t get much better than scoring the victory clinching goal in a Wembley final – just ask central defender Sean O’Hanlon, whose late header sealed Milton Keynes Dons’ 2-0 win against Grimsby Town in last season’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final.

O’Hanlon and his team mates, who followed their Wembley triumph by winning League 2 to complete a memorable double, step back on to the Trophy trail on Tuesday evening with a second round tie at home to Bournemouth.

And after been given a bye in Round One, former Swindon Town player O’Hanlon is hoping the Dons can defeat the Cherries to set themselves up for another run to the final. “It would be great to get to Wembley again,” says the 25 year-old defender.

“Last season’s final was a tremendous occasion for everyone involved with the club,” he adds, “and without doubt it was the highlight of my career so far. Playing at Wembley, scoring a goal and winning the match – fantastic!

“I’d love to think we can go all the way again and that’s the aim. Bournemouth will give us a tough time, that’s for sure, but we’ve got home advantage and if we can make that pay then our Wembley memories will hopefully help us through future rounds as well.”
Since winning the Trophy and clinching promotion the Dons have had a change of manager, Roberto di Matteo having replaced Paul Ince following Ince’s move to Blackburn Rovers, and there have also been a number of changes to the playing squad.

But despite any disruption that may have been envisaged at Stadium:mk, the Dons sit just two places and two points below the Play-Off positions as they turn their attention from League 1 to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

O’Hanlon says: “We’re still finding our feet in League 1, and although we’re pretty well placed after nine games we’ve not yet got the consistency we’re looking for – we win a game, lose the next one, win the next one, and that’s how it’s been all season so far.

“But the manager has got us playing some good stuff and the new lads in the squad are settling well. And we’re going into the Bournemouth game on the back of a great 4-0 win at Millwall on Saturday.

“Once we get some consistency in our performances I think we can really push on. After being promoted it’s not just survival we’re after, we want another promotion – and if we could do that and get to the Trophy Final again it would be another fantastic season.”

Berry Tramel ranks the best trophies in college football-

Trophy News from Oklahoma

Berry Tramel ranks the best trophies in college football- TREASURES OF VICTORY

?1. Little Brown Jug Trophy: Michigan & Minnesota. In 1903, Michigan coach Hurryup Fielding Yost left his water jug in a Minnesota locker room, later asked for it back and was told he’d have to win it back. And so Michigan has, mostly, for more than a century.

?2. Victory Bell Trophy: Cincinnati & Miami-Ohio. Cincy fans “borrowed” Miami’s bell in the 1890s, and it’s been traveling ever since.

?3. Old Oaken Bucket Trophy: Indiana & Purdue. Established in 1925.

?4. Golden Egg Trophy: Mississippi State & Ole Miss. Established in 1927 to serve as bounty for the winner so the goal posts wouldn’t be destroyed.

?5. Commander in Chief’s Trophy: Air Force, Army & Navy. Later-generation hardware, but the most noble, given to the round-robin winner among the service academies.

?6. Paul Bunyan’s Axe Trophy: Minnesota & Wisconsin. Established in 1948 and symbolic of the lumberjack regions of these schools. Minnesota would have some cool trophies, if the Gophers could win more consistently.

?7. Illy Illibuck Trophy: Ohio State & Illinois. A wooden turtle trophy, established in 1926, a year after the winner was awarded a real turtle.

?8. Golden Hat Trophy: Oklahoma & Texas. Actually started in 1929 as the Bronze Hat, a gift from the Texas State Fair for agreeing to play in Dallas.

?9. Jeweled Shillelagh Trophy: USC & Notre Dame. Produced in 1952 to celebrate the 26-year anniversary of the rivalry.

?10. Apple Cup Trophy: Washington State & Washington. Simple yet elegant name for a trophy instituted in 1962.

?11. Old Brass Spittoon Trophy: Michigan State & Indiana. Established 1950. The Big Ten clearly has the corner on great trophies.

?12. Platypus Trophy: Oregon State & Oregon. Established in 1959 but mysteriously disappeared in 1961 before reappearing in this decade. Makes this list because a platypus has features of both a duck and a beaver.

?13. Iron Skillet Trophy: SMU & TCU. Legend has it, an SMU tailgater in the 1950s was frying frog legs, and one thing led to another.

?14. Fremont Cannon Trophy: UNLV & Nevada. A replica of a cannon that explorer John Fremont hauled West and abandoned in an 1844 snowdrift. Actually fired until 1999.

?15. Telephone Trophy: Missouri & Iowa State. Seems the opposing coaches in 1959 could hear each other on rotary pressbox phones. The gaffe was fixed before kickoff, but Northwestern Bell had a trophy made to honor the occasion.
