Trophies and medals for Penn athletes

Pennsylvania athletes brought home several trophies and medals over the past week

Local fans were riveted to Friday night’s Class AAA matchup between Steel-High and Susquehanna Twp., an unusual championship game pairing two teams from the same area.

Only one team takes home the trophy, however, and Steel-High added yet more hardware to the school’s trophy case.

The same day, the Central Dauphin girls gave the school its first state basketball championship by coming from behind in the second half to beat Mount Lebanon for the AAAA, or large-school, title.

As Central Dauphin and Steel-High paraded championship trophies around Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center, East Pennsboro’s Leah Gingrich spent Friday and Saturday setting two state swimming records in winning Class AA gold medals in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle at Bucknell University.

Gingrich wasn’t the only local swimmer to make a big splash during the four days at Kinney Natatorium. Hershey’s Katie Nolan was named the outstanding swimmer in the girls AAA meet by taking two individual gold medals in the 100-yard butterfly (in state record time) and 100-yard free, and earning a third with teammates Erica Rapp, Katelyn Miller and Jordan Liedholm in the 400-free relay.

Younger brother David Nolan added to the family mantel with a boys AA gold in the 200-yard IM. A fourth area swimmer, Cumberland Valley’s Steven Gasparini, captured gold in the boys AAA 200 IM.

These performances came a week after Central Dauphin won the AAA state team wrestling championship at the Giant Center.

Congratulations to all of the Pennsylvania trophy and medal winners!

Gymnastics trophies for Arkansas team

Friday, February 1st, 2008

The Jacksonville Gymnastics competitive team is continuing its tradition of being one of the best and largest teams in the state. Jacksonville is part of USA Gymnastics and draws gymnasts from all over central Arkansas.

With one of the largest teams in the state, Jacksonville has gymnasts competing – and winning – at almost every level of competition.

Jacksonville has brought home 17 first place trophies in four meets this season, most recently competing in Pine Bluff. The team won first place trophies for levels four, five and six. No team trophy was given for level three, but Jacksonville easily had the most points for that level.

The level six team has won three first place trophies this season. Level six is considered maybe the hardest level technically because judges want the gymnasts to be well-prepared before they are moved up to the optional levels – level seven and up. Optional gymnasts compete their individual routines that are choreographed for them personally by their coaches and compete using more difficult skills.

Trophies News spotlights the Goat Trophy college basketball rivalry

Minnesota – St. Olaf College and Carleton College played the first of two games this season to determine if the Knights can maintain possession of the famed Goat Trophy. St. Olaf was the winner of last night’s game, beating Carleton by just 1 point (final score 61-60).

HISTORY OF THE GOAT TROPHY

• In 1914, Endre Anderson, a St. Olaf student (and later Oles coach) fashioned a makeshift goat out of a chair and hung it from the rafters of the St. Olaf gym. He was trying to “get the goat” of the Carleton players. Carleton won that game and claimed the Goat as a trophy. The two teams have traded the “Goat” ever since.

• The team not in possession of the Goat Trophy must be sweep the season series in order to wrest control away from the other team.

• After earning of the “Goat” with two wins in 1958, St. Olaf maintained possession of the trophy until 1989-90 when Carleton prevailed in a pair of close contests. The trophy has resided with Carleton every year since, except the 2002-03 season when the Oles pulled out a pair of overtime victories.

Monday, December 24th, 2007

Trophies News from Baton Rouge, LA

Earlier this month, LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey won the Bronko Nagurski, Rotary Lombardi, Outland and Ronnie Lott trophies. Each time, his name was called, he walked up to the podium and took the trophy. But, Dorsey was not allowed to take the trophies home with him that day.

“I’m supposed to be getting them pretty soon,” he said. “They’re supposed to be mailing them to me.”

After the trophies arrive, LSU will later receive trophy duplicates for display at the school.

“The ones that they presented me will be coming home eventually,” Dorsey said.

He has not decided which trophy of the four is his favorite.

“I appreciate all of them,” he said. “I can’t say which one I like the most. I’m just thankful that I got the ones that I got. It was great. I met a lot of nice people.”

Trophies - Lombardi goes to LSU lineman

Trophies News congratulates triple winner Glenn Dorsey!

Louisiana State defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey won the Vince Lombardi Trophy as U.S. college football’s top lineman or linebacker Wednesday night. It was Dorsey’s third award this week!

The six-foot-two, 303-pound Dorsey also won the Bronko Nagurski Award on Monday, given to the nation’s top defensive player. In addition, he was named the Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year earlier Wednesday.

Dorsey is also a finalist for the Bednarik award for outstanding defensive player and the Outland Trophy for best interior lineman.

He said the Rotary Lombardi Award means more than any of them.

“This is the Heisman to me,” he said. “It’s basically saying you’re the best at what you do. It’s a big-time award.”

The Lombardi Award was initiated by Houston’s Rotary Club in 1970. The trophy originated shortly after its Hall of Fame namesake – Vince Lombardi – died of cancer.

About 500 college coaches, former finalists and media members voted for the annual award.

About the O’ Brien Award:

The Davey O’Brien Award honors the nation’s top collegiate quarterback. O’Brien is a legendary sports hero at the high school, college and professional levels. O’Brien was named to 13 All-America teams and became the only college football player to win the Heisman, Maxwell and Walter Camp trophies in the same year.

After graduating, O’Brien signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL. In his rookie season he broke fellow TCU alum, Sammy Baugh’s NFL record and was named first-team quarterback on the National Football Leagues’ All-Star Team. He retired after the 1940 season to join the FBI. His success on the gridiron was transformed into a life of service and success in the public sector. The Davey O’Brien Foundation honors his memory and continues to inspire athletes to live up to their greatest potential through this Award, as well as other awards and scholarships at the high school level.
