Local growers and national champions showed off their prize exhibits at the annual horticultural show in Chipping at the weekend. The number of exhibitors was up this year with some of the new names among the trophies winners. Local growers did particularly well in the vegetable section.
All trophies in the vegetable class were won by villagers, with overall best in show going to Frank Hoyle for his leeks. Among the judges were experts who had been at national shows including Southport and Tatton. A vast array of flower and plant exhibits created a display of color but organizers said the poor summer weather had taken its toll on chrysanthemums.
While the number of entries was down on previous years, there was an increase in pansies and pot plants and there were some unusual and attractive gladiolus entries.
The show was well attended and the Chipping WI provided refreshments. Next year will be the show’s 30th anniversary, and plans are afoot to make this an extra special event.
