Champions TrophyTrophies News spotlights the Samsung Hockey Champions Trophy

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Germany defeated Australia 1-0 yesterday to earn a record ninth Champions Trophy in world field hockey. It was their first since 2001.

Captain Timo Wess scored the only goal from a penalty corner after five minutes of the final.

“We were better in the first half but Australia’s superior fitness made them dangerous in the second period as they came at us in waves,” said Germany coach Markus Weise.

“In sports, if you don’t work hard you don’t get lucky, and today we worked extremely hard to deny them a goal,” he said.

In the play-off for third and fourth, the Netherlands made tournament history after edging out Korea 3-2 in a thrilling play-off. This win assured the Dutch a medal in the Champions Trophy for a record 10th consecutive time.

Spain took fifth place, beating Britain 4-2 to earn an automatic spot in next year’s tournament in Rotterdam.
