For the third year, City College Brighton and Hove is providing and sponsoring the much-coveted Brighton Marathon trophies for the first Brightonian male and female past the finish line. The distinctive designs for this year’s trophies, inspired by the iconic white cliffs of Brighton’s coastline, come from Emma O’Neill, a first year Foundation Degree Fine Art student at the College. The two solid cubes, cast by Emma from white marble and intersected with forged steel plates, reflect the passing of time and will continue to change in future years as the steel plates leave their mark.
“Emma’s come up with a highly original design and I think the trophies provided her with a really stimulating creative challenge”, said Chris Hill, City College’s curriculum team leader for higher education arts courses. “It’s also given her the opportunity to apply her developing creative art practice in a real life, professional situation.”
“I think the trophies are great and they reflect a lot about Brighton and the Brighton Marathon”, said the Brighton Marathon’s Chief Executive, Tin Hutchings. “As well as being reminiscent of the chalk cliffs, they’re strong and robust and I’m sure the winners will be proud to display them in their homes for years to come.”
