Final Bracket Drag Race Doesn’t Disappoint

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Series championships in 11 classes, and five Wally trophies, were on the line for drag racers at Brainerd International Raceway last weekend during the fifth and final race in the Bracket Drag Racing Series.   In addition to being the final series race of the season, it was also the annual National Dragster Challenge, where racers in seven classes had a shot at winning a Wally, which is similar to trophies that pro drivers in the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series compete for. Trophies were awarded to drivers winning the Super Pro, Pro ET and Sportsman classes.

Winners of the Pro Bike/Sled and Street Bike classes raced off for a Wally, as did the winners of the Comp Trophy and Street Trophy classes. Series champions in each class have not been determined as BIR is compiling points from the weekend’s racing. The racing had a slightly different twist. All classes only raced an eighth-mile instead of a quarter-mile. Fall temperatures and weather conditions can make the track unsafe near the quarter-mile finish line so the track was shortened.

NHRA West Central Division Summit Race of Champions Crowned

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

The NHRA West Central Division Summit Racing Series picked up the action for the Race of Champions for trophies this past weekend at Kearney Raceway Park in conjunction with the Division’s National Open event. The event was postponed due to bad weather at Brainerd International Raceway back on September 18.

Four racers, including Super Pro winner Landon Stallbaumer made the wait, and the extra trip, pay off as they took home the championship trophies. Stallbaumer, Wakarusa, Kan., took the win in a ’03 dragster posting a lap of 8.177 seconds at 156.73 against Kyle Kunze, Persia, Iowa, who recorded a perfect reaction time but broke out with an 8.960 second run on an 8.97 dial-in with his ’67 Nova.

In the Pro class it was a pair of Kansas racers facing off in the final round as Nyle Reinert, Great Bend, Kan., took the holeshot and held on for the win over TJ Tobler, Leawood, Kan. Reinert went 12.149 seconds at 107.47 in his ’74 Pontiac.

Nebraska racer Tom Gilligan, Fremont, Neb., took his ’77 Kawasaki to the Super Pro Bike winner’s circle with a lap of 8.928 seconds at 146.10 mph in defeating Beau Drexler, Lakewood, Colo., who left early with a foul start on his ’08 Buell. Toni Vetter made the trip from Gettysburg, S.D., to race her ’75 Mustang in the High School class knocking out Matt Selden, Bellevue, Neb., for the win in 12.391 seconds at 109.35 mph.

Former Miss Teen Las Cruces Wins El Paso Speedway Park Championship

Monday, September 19th, 2011

A former beauty queen has left pageants behind and taken up a new hobby. The racing season in El Paso came to a close Friday night. Drivers had one last chance to compete for a championship and among those vying for a win was a former Miss Teen Las Cruces. And this queen is nothing less than a fierce competitor.

Holly Jones, a former Miss Teen Las Cruces, who’s been racing since she was old enough to get a driver’s license loves the modified GRT she races in. But before getting behind the wheel, Holly had to get her dad, also a race car driver, on board with the idea. “It took a lot of convincing, a lot of convincing, because he thought, ‘Oh she’s so girly. Why would she want to get dirty and do stuff like that?’ But, I finally convinced him and I got the opportunity when I was 16,” said Holly.

Holly, who’s also a former Southern New Mexico Fair Queen has raced hundreds of drivers over the years. It’s a hobby that runs in the family.  “If they don’t race a car, they know someone who or they’re married to someone who does, so every weekend, it’s kind of what we do. It’s like a family gathering. We go race together,” said Holly. In fact, during one competition her brother came in first, Holly second and their dad third. Even though that day her brother won the competition, she’s got plenty to show for her wins. During her 11 years racing cars, Holly has won more than 200 trophies and she says, she’s running out of room.  “I have too many. I have so many trophies that I had to start, after I would win something, I would just start giving it away to a kid in the crowd,” said Holly.

The trophy she’s proudest of, “The Copper on Dirt” in Tucson, Arizona where she competed against 75 other drivers.  “There were only two female drivers there and the first night, I got first place and the second night, I got second place,” said Holly. Even though she’s got the trophies to prove it, some find it hard to believe that this beauty queen is actually their competition. “There was one race that I showed up to in California and I was standing next to my car and some of the opponents walked up to me and they were like, ‘Oh are you our trophy girl for tonight?’ and I was like, ‘No, but wait until I kick your butt out on the track’,” said Holly.

Holly says although she’d like to go pro, she does not want to constantly be on the road, but she says it’s a hobby that she plans to keep around. “I’m going to do this till probably I’m in the grave. I think this is something I could probably do forever,” said Holly. At Friday’s race, which was the last of the El Paso race season, Holly won the overall championship for the 2011 El Paso Speedway Park Championship. That means that for this year, she was the best race car driver in her class.

Brian Chandler Bags More Championship Trophies

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Haverhill race driver Brian Chandler bagged sixth and fourth-placed finish trophies after competing in the Ma5da Championships at Donnington last weekend.  Chandler, who was on painkillers following a motorbike accident on Easter Sunday, qualified ninth out of 58 for the first race last Saturday (May 14) morning in heavy rain and a slippery track. The conditions put Chandler about four seconds behind his dry-track pace, and soon broke away from the middle of the pack in the second lap. By the end of the 20-minute race, he had advanced to sixth despite running his car wide around a few hairpin corners and bouncing over the grass.

On Sunday, the track was dry but cold, and again Chandler lined up in ninth, making a good start but failing to advance any places in the first corner. Towards the end of the first lap, the car ahead of him bounced through a big puddle, splashing thick muck over his windscreen which, with no washers and just wipers on the car, seriously reduced his visibility for the rest of the race. Within a lap, Chandler had broken into the top six and broken away from the rest of the pack and moved up the fourth. The top four then engaged in a battle for first, with Chandler climbing to second for a lap as the drivers were four abreast going around a hairpin, before dropping back to third and then fourth.
He performed a risky maneuver to try and take third around the outside of a bend late on, but was run wide on to the grass and lost several car lengths by reeling sideways to end fourth.

Chandler said: “There wasn’t much room, but we had to trust each other not to do anything silly at 100 miles per hour. I was real happy with the result and got some more silverware to give to my daughters as I am giving them any trophies I pick up. Three trophies in three meets and a free Scalextric for driver of the day at Silverstone – not bad for the start of the season. I aim to finish in the top ten out of over 100 entries at the end of the season.”

Chandler will next race at Castle Combe on May 30 (Bank Holiday Monday).

Trophy News from New Zealand…
The Reactor’s Trophies Hall of Fame Bound

Former New Zealand Member of Parliament and president of the New Zealand Trotting Hall Of Fame, Gilbert Myles, is overwhelmed with the continued generosity displayed by the owners of pacing champion Auckland Reactor.

Just a couple of weeks after announcing it will donate 10 per cent of Auckland Reactor’s winnings at the three Cambridge meetings on January 2, 9, and 16 to the Waikato Hospice, the owners of the brilliant Mach Three 4-year-old have now agreed to donate all of his winning trophies (from the November 28 Franklin Cup on) to the Alexandra Park based Hall Of Fame.

“This is an absolutely amazing gesture. What a wonderful thought. The owners of Auckland Reactor need to be applauded for this. John Curtin is doing an absolutely brilliant marketing job with this horse. He is a true ambassador of the sport not only here but world-wide,” Myles said.

Curtin, of JC International, is a prominent standardbred agent in both the northern and southern hemispheres. He has a small share in Auckland Reactor and was only too pleased to have the champion’s trophies on display in the Hall of Fame. (more…)

Baldwin Snags SCORE Trophy-Truck Crown

Trophy News from Los Angeles, CA…….
Baldwin Snags SCORE Trophy-Truck Crown

After all of the dust settled following the recent 41st Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, the last man standing atop the podium with the crown of 2008 SCORE Desert Series Overall point champion was veteran Las Vegas racer B.J. Richardson.

Richardson, 43, a prominent Southern Nevada businessman and casino developer, drove the Las Vegas Dissemination Company Chevy-powered Bunderson open-wheel desert race car to the unlimited Class 1 season point title that also earned him the coveted 2008 SCORE Overall point championship as well. During the five-race season, he had second place class finishes at the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 and the SCORE Terrible’s Primm 300 along with a 10th at the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 and a ninth in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.
Racing in one of the two most competitive classes in the series, Richardson claimed the title with 414 total points. By finishing every mile of every race, Richardson also earned his first Toyota Milestone Award.

Richardson and all the 2008 SCORE Desert Series point champions will be honored Saturday during the annual SCORE Awards Night at Terrible’s Resort in Primm, Nev. The evening begins with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the awards at 7:30 p.m.

In one of the closest overall point battles in the 35-year history of the world’s foremost desert racing series, Richardson won the overall crown by just three points over fellow Las Vegan B.J. Baldwin. Baldwin, 29, won the season point championship in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division for the second time in three years in the No. 97 Baldwin Motorsports Chevy Silverado. Baldwin, whose father Bobby Baldwin finished ninth in the SCORE Trophy-Truck season points, earned his third consecutive Toyota Milestone Award.

After leading the SCORE Overall points much of the season, San Diego County racer Adam Pfankuch, 26, finished third overall while winning Class 1-2/1600 in a Mirage-VW with 403 season points. Pfankuch earned a Toyota Milestone Award as well as winning the $20,000 Volkswagen of America bonus for earning the most points of any VW-powered vehicle this season.

A total of just 36 points separated the top 10 in the final 2008 SCORE Overall point standings led by four drivers from Class 1, three from SCORE Trophy-Truck, two from Class 1-2/1600 and one from Class 5/1600.

SCORE points are based on starting and finishing as well as the number of starters in each class in every race.

“What an unbelievable season, especially when you consider I’ve been hanging around the desert for over 20 years,” said the soft-spoken Richardson. “This was a dream season, and we were able to stay consistent, finish every race and win Class 1 and the 2008 SCORE Overall point championship without winning a race. That goes to show you how competitive SCORE desert racing is in general and our class in particular. I can’t stay enough, though, about our entire Las Vegas Dissemination Company team, my teammate Pat Dean, our dear friend and sponsor John Gaughan, our co-driver T.J. Flores and the magnificent prep our cars get from Valley Performance in Las Vegas. Without all of the ingredients, we would have never won this championship.”

While this is Richardson’s first SCORE class point championship, it was Baldwin’s second and third for Pfankuch, who owns Powerbox Transaxles. Pfankuch was the second driver for two season point championship teams. He was the second driver for the title team in Class 1-2/1600 SCORE points both in 2003 (with Eric Allen) and in 2004 (with Brian Jeffrey). In 2004, the Jeffrey/Pfankuch tandem was also the SCORE Overall Point champions. This was the first season Pfankuch won a class title as driver of record.

While Baldwin drove the entire season solo, Pfankuch did almost the same, but had help from Steven Eugenio, El Centro, Calif., in both the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 and the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

Baldwin, was second in Laughlin, seventh in San Felipe and earned his third career SCORE Trophy-Truck race win at the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, slipped to 10th in Primm but kept his point lead and clinched the his second career title with a second at the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in the marquee SCORE racing division for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks.
