Pennsylvania athletes brought home several trophies and medals over the past week

Local fans were riveted to Friday night’s Class AAA matchup between Steel-High and Susquehanna Twp., an unusual championship game pairing two teams from the same area.

Only one team takes home the trophy, however, and Steel-High added yet more hardware to the school’s trophy case.

The same day, the Central Dauphin girls gave the school its first state basketball championship by coming from behind in the second half to beat Mount Lebanon for the AAAA, or large-school, title.

As Central Dauphin and Steel-High paraded championship trophies around Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center, East Pennsboro’s Leah Gingrich spent Friday and Saturday setting two state swimming records in winning Class AA gold medals in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle at Bucknell University.

Gingrich wasn’t the only local swimmer to make a big splash during the four days at Kinney Natatorium. Hershey’s Katie Nolan was named the outstanding swimmer in the girls AAA meet by taking two individual gold medals in the 100-yard butterfly (in state record time) and 100-yard free, and earning a third with teammates Erica Rapp, Katelyn Miller and Jordan Liedholm in the 400-free relay.

Younger brother David Nolan added to the family mantel with a boys AA gold in the 200-yard IM. A fourth area swimmer, Cumberland Valley’s Steven Gasparini, captured gold in the boys AAA 200 IM.

These performances came a week after Central Dauphin won the AAA state team wrestling championship at the Giant Center.

Congratulations to all of the Pennsylvania trophy and medal winners!
