Combing Schools Hard for Students, Communities

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

Each day, students gather in the Lovington High School science lab to catalog and repair trophies won by their classmates and some of their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.

The school, built in 1907, is in its last weeks. The trophies won’t follow Lovington students 10 miles to Arthur and the newly renamed Arthur-Lovington High School this fall. They will be displayed in the bank, phone company, library, grain elevator and churches here.

A year ago, voters approved — by a 32-vote margin — the annexation of the Lovington School District by the Arthur School District, which has about 115 students in its junior and senior high school. LHS has 78 students, including 16 seniors.

The last day of classes is May 25. “It’s going to be tough after spending all my life here,” says Lovington sophomore Logan West, 16. “There’s a time in everyone’s life where they have to make a change. I’m fine with it.”

Second Grader Wins State Wrestling Championship

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Hunter Bradley’s favorite sport is wrestling. The number of ribbons and trophies on display in his Hartselle home can attest to that fact.

The Barkley Bridge Elementary School second grader captured three state trophies in 2012.

He is the reigning state USA wrestling champion in the K-2, 50-pound division with a record of 33 wins and nine losses. He also won the Southern Youth Wrestling Organization (AYWO) state championship in the K-2, 55-lb. division for the second year in a row and took the 3rd-4th, 55-pound division title with an unbeaten record of 34 wins.

Hunter has three years of wrestling experience under his belt. He took up the sport at age five and has never looked back. He says he can’t imagine participating in any other sport.

Hunter has a private coach, Ken Clark, and is a member of the “Grappling with Character” Wrestling Club in Madison. He and fellow club members practice three days a week for two hours and compete in tournaments throughout Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, usually on Saturdays. Their season extends from October through May and practice sessions are conducted from August through June.

Dana Bradley said her son had opportunities to try other sports but opted to stick with wrestling.

Local Emmy Awards Brighten Times Square

Monday, April 9th, 2012

The best and brightest on the New York TV scene were on display last night at the 55th annual local Emmy Awards. FishbowlNY was on hand for the  four-hour awards ceremony at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.

The biggest winner was MSG with 14 trophies, while WNBC/Channel 4 led all over-the-air outlets with 11 Emmys.

WCBS/Channel 2 took home the top prize of Best Evening Newscast–Over 35 Minutes–for its Hurricane Irene Aftermath. Anchors Maurice DuBois and Kristine Johnson were not there to accept their trophies, but weathercaster Lonnie Quinn was in attendance. Quinn already was selected Best On-Camera Weather Anchor, and colleague Chris Wragge was back at the podium as Best News Anchor. A one-time personal trainer, Wragge rushed back to Manhattan after competing in a Miami triathlon earlier in the day.

“This morning I knew my only shot of winning anything was coming to these Emmys,” Wragge deadpanned.

MDI and EHS Take Top Trophies at States

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

The Ellsworth High School and Mount Desert Island High School show choirs brought home the winning trophies in their respective divisions at the annual Maine State Jazz Festival vocal championships held last weekend at Ellsworth High School.

After two full days of watching some of the state’s most talented youngsters sing and dance to packed houses there was simply no denying, these two local schools had it all. That is they had the natural talent, the direction, the enthusiasm, stamina and that indefinable extra something that separates the good from the great, and deservedly wound up with the trophies.

Had these two schools been in the same division and competing against each other, it is possible the judges’ heads would have exploded trying to choose between EHS’s thrilling retrospective of tunes from its choir’s 20 years of competition and MDIHS’s spectacularly beautiful rendition of tunes from “The Lion King.”

In fact all our area schools shone at the competitions, with Sumner Memorial High School upping its game considerably and delivering one of the best moments of the entire event with its trio of swinging, harmonizing gals Deana Watson, Hannah Woodward and Sierra Weeks singing “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and Ellsworth Middle School getting back in top form and pulling off a well deserved one rating from the judges for its performance of “Mary Poppins” songs. Southwest Harbor’s Pemetic School brought home a second place win in its division with phenom Peter Jacobson laying claim, once again, to the best male vocalist trophy.

Farmington Dancers Lose Out as Dance Scores Change

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Some high school dance teams will be getting a visit from officials with the New Mexico Activities Association this week. That’s after a couple of squads that won trophies at the state Spirit Championships learned they’ll have those awards taken away.

Original scores put Hope Christian, Taos and St. Michael’s as the top three in Class 3-A. In Class 4-A, it was Roswell, Farmington then Gallup. But the NMAA says the scores were tallied wrong. They now say that Farmington and Taos will lose their trophies – and Sandia Prep and Piedra Vista will be awarded them instead.

The team is disappointed, but members say they’ll continue to work hard. “Things can happen but I do believe we need to hold someone accountable for their actions,” said assistant coach Brittany Wade-Pruett. “I feel like this situation is just fuel for us and it’s just going to drive us next year to push even harder than we do,” said team member Emily Jaquez.

The NMAA says it understands the seriousness of the error and apologizes to all schools involved. Officials will be going to Farmington this Friday to speak with coaches and dance members.

It’s Four State Titles for RHHS JROTC

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

Richmond Hill High School’s JROTC cadets went to Fort Gordon over the weekend with one mission: bring back state championship trophies. The Wildcat Battalion accomplished that goal Saturday at the Augusta Army installation where it captured four state titles.

“The thrill of victory, how sweet it is,” said retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Bradley, the RHHS JROTC Department Head. “(The students) hard work and dedication has brought us a state championship.”

It was the best showing in the Georgia State Drill Meet Richmond Hill has had to date. The school took home state championship trophies in both the female and the male exhibition armed squad events and the male color guard.

In the female exhibition armed dual, Carmen Camacho and Danielle Wedeking took home first place for the second consecutive year, defending the school’s only state championship from last year.

“This is huge for our program; it shows how far we have come in such a short time,” Bradley said. “Our cadets have worked hard this year and for them to win a state championship, it is truly satisfying and rewarding for them.”

RHHS cadets also placed various other events.
