For the third time in school history, the University of West Florida earned the Gulf South Conference Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophy in the same year, it was announced by the league office on Thursday. The all-sports trophy is awarded based on each school’s performance in every league sport, and the Argonauts outpaced seven other conference schools to win both the men’s and women’s trophy.

West Florida’s sweep of the men’s and women’s all-sports trophy is the third in school history, with the other two coming in 1997-98 and 2006-07. The sweep also marks the ninth in the league’s 30-year history of awarding both men’s and women’s all-sports trophies.

This year marks the 10th total women’s all-sports trophy for UWF, including a league-record seven straight. The Argonauts (37.5 points) outpaced second place Valdosta State (32.0) in the women’s all-sports standings, thanks to league titles in cross country, golf, tennis and volleyball. The Argos were also league semifinalists in women’s soccer.

The men’s all-sports trophy is the fourth in school history, with the last coming in 2006-07. The UWF men’s teams placed no lower than fourth in any sport, including a league championship in tennis. The Argos were also runners-up in cross country, golf and soccer. UWF totaled 33.5 points, while Alabama-Huntsville came in second with 27.0.

The GSC will present the all-sports trophies at its annual awards banquet on Monday, June 25 at the Hilton Birmingham/Perimeter Park in Birmingham, Ala. At that time, the GSC will also recognize its “Top Ten” student-athletes and reveal male and female winners of the GSC Commissioner’s Trophy. The “Top Ten” and Commissioner’s Trophy awards are presented to the most outstanding student-athletes in the league based on athletic, academic, extracurricular and community service criteria.

The California All Stars, competitive cheerleading gym will be entering its 12th year with much more space to work with. The San Marcos gym will open the season with over 15,000 sq. ft – 3 full cheer floors, a pit and tumble apparatus everywhere. With the addition of new space brings new room for trophies.

The past year has brought California All Stars back to back NCA championships levels 1 through 5, World Championships – back to back and at least 50 1st place trophies from all levels. The California All Stars have been able to send athletes to extend their education and cheer opportunities at University of Oregon, Kentucky, UCLA, UCSB and the University of Louisville.

Currently The California All Stars is gearing up for The World Championships in Orlando to defend their title on April 28th and immediately following is sign ups for the new season on May 8th.

“It just amazes me to see how much we have grown. I just keep reminding myself to remain thankful for all our success and blessings. The new addition of space will make practice run much more open and give all our athletes on all levels the time on the floor they deserve,” Jeff McQueen – Co Owner & Co-ed Head Coach, The California All Stars.

Some high school dance teams will be getting a visit from officials with the New Mexico Activities Association this week. That’s after a couple of squads that won trophies at the state Spirit Championships learned they’ll have those awards taken away.

Original scores put Hope Christian, Taos and St. Michael’s as the top three in Class 3-A. In Class 4-A, it was Roswell, Farmington then Gallup. But the NMAA says the scores were tallied wrong. They now say that Farmington and Taos will lose their trophies – and Sandia Prep and Piedra Vista will be awarded them instead.

The team is disappointed, but members say they’ll continue to work hard. “Things can happen but I do believe we need to hold someone accountable for their actions,” said assistant coach Brittany Wade-Pruett. “I feel like this situation is just fuel for us and it’s just going to drive us next year to push even harder than we do,” said team member Emily Jaquez.

The NMAA says it understands the seriousness of the error and apologizes to all schools involved. Officials will be going to Farmington this Friday to speak with coaches and dance members.

Richmond Hill High School’s JROTC cadets went to Fort Gordon over the weekend with one mission: bring back state championship trophies. The Wildcat Battalion accomplished that goal Saturday at the Augusta Army installation where it captured four state titles.

“The thrill of victory, how sweet it is,” said retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Bradley, the RHHS JROTC Department Head. “(The students) hard work and dedication has brought us a state championship.”

It was the best showing in the Georgia State Drill Meet Richmond Hill has had to date. The school took home state championship trophies in both the female and the male exhibition armed squad events and the male color guard.

In the female exhibition armed dual, Carmen Camacho and Danielle Wedeking took home first place for the second consecutive year, defending the school’s only state championship from last year.

“This is huge for our program; it shows how far we have come in such a short time,” Bradley said. “Our cadets have worked hard this year and for them to win a state championship, it is truly satisfying and rewarding for them.”

RHHS cadets also placed various other events.
