Monday, December 19th, 2011

Taylor Babb: Already a Triathlon Star at Age Ten

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Taylor Babb has trophies from triathlons in several states. “I have eight trophies. Five of them are first place,” said the 10-year-old from Arlington.

It all started just over a year ago, when Taylor and her father, a sports enthusiast, explored their interest in running online. “I had been training with my dad, and he talked me into looking online for some races,” Taylor said. She came in first in a nearby triathlon, and was immediately bitten by the competitive bug. “That sparked her interest,” said her dad, Ty, 36.

Her initial victory led to races in Louisiana, Alabama, California and Kansas, which then led to qualifying for the IronKids National triathlon in Des Moines, Iowa. Taylor came in second in the nation. “It was awesome,” Taylor said.

Her parents thought investing in Taylor’s talent was worth it, so they hired Lesley Brainard to train her. “She covered things I wasn’t hitting on,” Ty said. Brainard helped Taylor with her form for riding a bicycle and gave swimming pointers to improve her time. “She tells me what technique I need to do to get better,” Taylor said.

Taylor runs and swims in the mornings before school three days a week, and during the off-season in the winter she participates in soccer and swims on a team. Training is the part Taylor dislikes the most. What she does like: “Standing on the podium,” she said.

She inherited her athletic ability from her father. “I was a runner in high school. I wanted to do triathlons, but we didn’t have the means,” he said. “She’s a total daddy’s girl,” said Taylor’s mom, Kelly, 32.

Taylor’s future goal is a specific one. “The Olympics,” she said.

Mphela Wants Trophies for Sundowns’ Fans

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Last season’s Premiership top scorer Katlego Mphela says he wants to win trophies for Mamelodi Sundowns, but that players need to all have the same desire and push in the same direction.

The Brazilians were recently dumped out the Telkom Knockout by Moroka Swallows, who gave them a 3-0 hiding, and are fourth in the League with 19 points from 10 games. In the MTN 8, Johan Neeskens’ team exited the competition in the semifinal at the hands of Orlando Pirates, leaving just the Nedbank Cup and the Premiership to aim for in the 2011/12 season.

“Trophies are what we need at Sundowns. I can have all the qualities in the world, but if it doesn’t work [at the club] then maybe it is for the next generation to win the trophies,” is Mphela’s response. “But we [players] owe it to Sundowns. We need to win trophies for them. Personally I have achieved, but for the team I have not won anything. It is sad. But we think differently as players. If you don’t all have the same hunger or desire, then what can you achieve? “We all need to push; we need to all be going in the same direction and that is what has been missing in the last while.”

Sundowns host Maritzburg United in the League this weekend.

Wichita Trinity Academy Cheerleading Squad Wins Competitions

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Wichita Trinity cheerleading participated in the Heights sponsored showcase Battle of the Squads and left with four trophies. The squad, under the leadership of sponsors Katie Beckler and Tammara Cornish, took home trophies for best general execution, top jumps, top stunts and overall routine. No other team took home more trophies than Trinity did.

“It’s a good feeling to know all the hard work, stress and dedication we had paid off to be one of the best in Wichita,” said junior Nicola Gentry. Being one of the best in Wichita is no easy feat. With 6A and 5A schools at the competition, Trinity was one of the smallest schools in attendance, and they competed right along with them.

The trophies weren’t the only thing that the girls were excited about. They were excited because, unlike normal, the cheerleaders were the only reason any fans attended, and they had nearly 40 people in attendance just for them. “It was good to know a lot of students wanted to come and watch us perform for a change,” said Gentry.

Winning those trophies was the culmination of nearly five months of work the Knights had put in. “We had been working so hard since July and it finally came together,” said Gentry.

Each of the girls had different trophies that they found to be their favorite, including Gentry who chose the general execution award, but for senior Holly Berdan it was the top stunt award. “My teammates worked really hard to do elite stunts and make them entertaining for the crowd,” said Berdan.

Formula 1 Champ Vettel Loves the Trophies

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Sebastian Vettel has revealed one of his greatest joys is receiving a “nice trophy” on the Formula One podium. Also a collector of his numerous winning helmet livery designs, the back to back World Champion admitted on Monday that taking home a new “cup” from a Grand Prix is better than mere money. New trophies are a number one priority he stated. “I could give up anything, but not the trophies,” said the 24 year old, who in his 80 Formula 1 races has won 21 times and stood on 35 podiums.

“When you’ve put everything into it for two hours, whether you are rewarded with a big or a small cheque really doesn’t matter, but a nice cup makes a difference,” he told SID news agency. “When I stand up there (on the podium), I know life for me could not get much better.” Next month in India, Vettel will once again be presented with the official drivers’ championship trophy, and it’s the one that the German is not allowed to keep. The only way to keep looking at his name on the most important cup of all, then, is to keep the championships rolling.

“I have to give it back (eventually),” said Vettel, “so it would be great to have it for several years… Michael (Schumacher) had it for five in a row. “My ultimate goal has always been to be Formula One World Champion, and now no matter what happens in the future, it can’t be taken from me.” “I could give up anything, but not the trophies,” said the 24 year old, who in his 80 Formula 1 races has won 21 times and stood on 35 podiums. “When you’ve put everything into it for two hours, whether you are rewarded with a big or a small cheque really doesn’t matter, but a nice cup makes a difference,” he told SID news agency. “When I stand up there (on the podium), I know life for me could not get much better.”
