Computer Glitch Causes Debate Reversal

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Two high school debate teams in eastern Idaho have to give back their newly won state tournament trophies after officials discovered a glitch in the computer scoring system.

The Idaho State Journal reports both Blackfoot and Bonneville high schools took division top honors during the State Debate tournament in Meridian last weekend. Blackfoot was named the state champion, and Bonneville took third.

But the Idaho High School Activities Association told the schools earlier this week there was a computer error and the trophies would have to be returned. When the scores were re-tallied, Blackfoot lost its championship status by three points, and Bonneville dropped to third place.

Blackfoot coach Cherie Clawson says the mistake was heartbreaking for her team. Association assistant director Julie Hammons says her group is still trying to determine just what caused the error.

Eco Award Trophies Made From Felled Trees

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Trophies for Charnwood Borough Council’s first-ever environmental awards will be crafted from trees felled at Charnwood beauty spots.

Five trophies are being created for the council’s Don’t Muck Around Awards which aim to recognize residents and businesses who have taken action to improve the local environment.

The council’s woodland ranger, Stuart Freeman, is crafting the trophies out of felled oak, pine, holly, ash and walnut taken from wooded areas of the borough – meaning they will cost nothing to produce.

The trophies will be presented at a special awards ceremony to be held at the Radmoor Centre, Loughborough College, in June.

The categories are:

  • Schools and Young People – best environmental initiative;
  • Community – making a difference to the quality of the local environment;
  • Innovation – best innovative or creative solution to protect or enhance the environment;
  • Business – best commercial initiative which has benefitted the wider community.

The deadline for entries is noon on Monday, April 16.

Great Rugby Road Trip Hits Auckland

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Missing the excitement of the Rugby World Cup? A nationwide Webb Ellis Cup tour that kicked off in Kerikeri on Wednesday will travel the country for two months. The New Zealand Rugby Union says the “Great Rugby Rugby Road Trip” is to thank all the people in towns and cities around the country for the whole 2011 Cup experience and their support of the event.

The Webb Ellis Cup will visit 41 places during the trip, including five locations in Auckland. The Road Trip will feature a custom-built black truck to carry rugby’s prized silverware from Northland to Stewart Island. (No word on whether it’s the replica cup or the original, but it’s ours nonetheless.)

“We’re hoping the tour rekindles the excitement of those magical six weeks and encourages people to keep backing rugby – whether it’s by playing, refereeing, coaching, volunteering, or simply getting along and enjoying a game,” say Steve Tew, NZRU chief executive.

The Road Trip will also showcase New Zealand other prized rugby trophies – the Bledisloe Cup, the IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup and the IRB Junior World Championship Trophy. The free public events will allow fans to see the trophies currently held by the All Blacks, Blacks Ferns and the New Zealand Under 20s and Sevens teams. They’ll be taken to 100 schools around the country – Auckland’s lucky school is Takapuna Primary on Saturday February 18 between 10am and 2pm.?? As well as the trophies there’ll be heaps of rugby activities for the family and the chance to win Super Rugby jerseys and one of two all-expenses paid All Blacks weekend Test experiences. Along with the trophies inside the truck there’s a hi-tech photo facility that allows fans to have their photos taken “with” Richie McCaw.

“The support for rugby comes from all pockets of New Zealand, so to be able to share the success of, not only our RWC 2011 winning side, but our other successful teams with our stadium of four million is fantastic,” says Mr Tew.

High School Debate Team Wins Trophies

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

The combined South Lyon High School and South Lyon East High School debate team competed in the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association (MIFA) state tournament recently and walked away with a few trophies.

Coach Denise Kling-Pelto brought 13 students to compete — SLEHS students include Patrick Humfleet, a junior; Cooper Wagner, a sophomore, Laiya Mojica, a sophomore and Nash Saravanan, a senior, as well as SLHS students Tristen Moon, a freshman; Nathan Elwood, a freshman; Melissa Cluckey, a sophomore; J.P. Couling, a junior; Karri Perion, a junior; Jackie Burke, a senior; Lauren Okdie, a senior; Trevor Hamlin, a sophomore and Patricia Alvord, a sophomore. Cluckey, Perion, Couling, Elwood and Moon were trophies finalists. Moon took first place and Elwood third place as presiding officers of the tournament.

During the tournament participants were asked to research and present a convincing argument on any of a dozen hot topics such as nuclear energy, Social Security reform and CEO pay. After presenting their speeches students responded to a cross examination from their fellow competitors. Other local schools competing included Dexter, Novi, Plymouth and Canton.

“Debate expands the curriculum and it helps students prepare for higher education,” Kling-Pelto said, adding that 24 students district wide were involved in debate this school year. Kling-Pelto mentors the team on how to research, write, speak in front of an audience, and think on their feet. “What Coach KP really teaches is a valuable life skill that can be used now as well as in the future,” according to parent Bridget Perion.
The South Lyon debate team is open to high school students every fall.

Anyone interested in joining the high school debate team should look for the debate table at the district’s high school curriculum fairs.

Head coach Rebecca Taylor said: “We never expected that we would be coming home with that many trophies. “The standard was extremely high so for us to go there and perform so well was fantastic.” Rebecca, 21, said all of the Hawks worked extremely hard in preparation for the event. She added: “They were very proud of themselves and so they should be. To win 58 trophies at a national event is brilliant.”

The town cheerleaders excelled in a range of solo and team categories including pom, jazz and tumbling. The excellent performances at Blackpool were another boost for the cheerleaders and coaches. The club was only formed a little over a year ago but has already established itself on the national cheerleading scene.

It isn’t just on the floor where the members have been working hard. In recent months the club has also set up a number of events raising money to fund new specialist equipment.

It was back to the practice gym for the Hawks after their performances in Blackpool.
