Congratulations to the Gulfport Police Explorers Post 995!

Six members of the Gulfport Explorers Post 995 competed in the 2011 Florida Association of Police Explorers State Competition this past week and on Saturday June 25, their hard work and training paid off.

Explorers Captain Sam Smith says the team finished in 8th place out of 31 teams and the team earned third place trophies in two categories: Active Shooter and Search and Arrest. Smith writes on Gulfport Patch, “Overall we made a HUGE improvement since last year, and I am very proud of my team and how well they performed. Great job guys!”

The team competed in the week-long event last year but didn’t garner any trophies. They say they learned from that experience and came into this competition better prepared and driven to bring home a trophy.

Gulfport Police Det. Hanh Pham and School Resource Officer Steven Beltran advised the team during the competition.

The Kentucky Derby is now just five-and-a-half weeks away, and on Tuesday a very important piece of the derby arrived at Churchill Downs. The solid gold trophy that will be presented to the owner of this year’s derby winner arrived at the track Tuesday afternoon. The trophy is made by New England Sterling. Work on the trophy starts in the fall and it takes more than 2,000 man hours to make it.
The Kentucky Derby winner’s trophy was displayed along with three smaller sterling silver trophies that go to the winning trainer, jockey, and breeder at a media briefing at Churchill Downs following their early afternoon arrival at the home of the Kentucky Derby. The trophies were created by New England Sterling of Attleboro, Mass., and were delivered to the historic track by Marc Forbes, the company’s president, and Richard Powers, the president and CEO of the Precious Metals Division of the Cookson Group, the parent company of New England Sterling.
Forbes and Powers wore white gloves as they moved the trophies from their boxes to a display table as members of the media looked on at the formal unveiling of the trophies in Churchill’s Directors Room.
The design of the coveted Kentucky Derby winner’s trophy dates to 1924, when it was presented to Black Gold, the winner of the Golden Anniversary Derby. New England Sterling manufactured the trophy for Louisville jeweler Lemon & Son from 1975-1999, and has supplied the trophy directly to Churchill Downs since 1999.
The derby trophy will be on display at many events leading up to Derby Day so you’ll have a chance to see it in person. New England Sterling also created the Kentucky Derby Trophy Collection, nine pieces of jewelry in the shape of the derby trophy made from the same gold used in the trophy.

There are many different award categories that show excellence in some form by the recipient; trophies are just one of these different types of awards. You can receive a trophy for almost anything. From scholastics to athletics to salesmanship, trophies are a tangible symbol of superior achievement in a particular field. Today, trophies can vary from the most simple plastic cup to an imposing sculpture. The shapes are almost unlimited, and the materials vary from an inexpensive plastic to a high quality lead crystal. Regardless of the material, they are always associated with excellence, carry significant meaning for the recipient, and are proudly displayed.
No matter what your budget, there’s a trophy that fits. From the totally unique and one-of-a-kind Stanley Cup awarded to each year’s National Hockey League’s champion, or to the mass-produced plastic figures costing less than a dollar, there’s a trophy for every need and occasion. The beauty of this type of award is that they are treasured by the recipients no matter what they cost or from what they are made.
Molded plastics colored to look like silver, brass or gold have replaced the metal cups and figurines that once adorned the top of the wooden base. Today, awards companies have their choice of literally hundreds of trophy parts that are manufactured by separate factories and sent the to he dealer for trophy design and fabrication. Consequently, there’s a mind-boggling number of parts and variations that the awards dealer has at his fingertips to present to the customer…and everyone and ever need can be met. From gold, silver or clear figurines, cups or futuristic designs there’s a trophy available that can have an acrylic, marble or wood base. Add to that, the availability of crystal and acrylic used in the figurine, and you have a limitless selection of trophies suitable for any occasion.
As alluded to, designing a trophy involves many stages based on the components used. First, someone must come up with a design that may have to be modified to adapt to the material that’s selected. Then, the assembler chooses the individual components from which the trophy is to be fabricated. Starting from the bottom, the trophy base must be selected. The material selection ranges from true materials such as marble or wood to giving a faux appearance by using plastics. then there’s the column which is the vertical piece attached to the base that is topped with the figurine or specialty item. The column my provide support for another column of varying design that is topped by the figurine. These column can be plain or fancy, ranging from wood to meta to holographs. Then, there’s the riser. It’s a small, decorative element that’s attached to the base and denotes the true meaning of the trophy, ie, first place in the breaststroke. At the very top, there’s the figurine that can vary from literally being a “figure” to some unique design that may represent a corporation.
It’s obvious that trophies have come a long way since their introduction by the Greeks and Romans. Today, trophies are a beautiful way to recognize and reward any level of achievement in any endeavor.

It’s that time of year again…March Madness is ready to strike again! Often overlooked during the craziness of office pools and excitement of the tournament is the trophy given to the most outstanding collegiate player in the country. Presented by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), the Player of the Year Award has been awarded since 1959, and is considered to be the oldest award of it’s kind. The Player of the Year Award was renamed The Oscar Robertson Trophy in 1998 one of the most basketball favorite trophies.

Oscar Robertson, The Big O, first gained national attention at the University of Cincinnati where he lead the Bearcats to the Final Four in 1959 & 1960. After graduating, he was a co-captain of the 1960 U. S. Olympic Team that went undefeated and is widely considered to be the greatest basketball team ever assembled. His 14 year pro career was highlighted by being a twelve time NBA all star, and is the all time leader in triple double games (season and career) and in rebounds by a guard. For his achievements in both college and professional basketball, Robertson was named “Player of the Century” by the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 2000. Since retiring from the NBA, Robertson has excelled off the court in business and philanthropic endeavors including the NBA Legends Foundation, the Boys Club of New York, and the National Kidney Foundation.

In 1997 The Big O performed the assist of a lifetime when he donated a kidney to his daughter Tia, who was suffering from lupus. For a college player to receive a trophy named after Oscar Robertson is not only an honor for his college basketball trophies and achievements, but something that the young man should aspire to live up to for a lifetime.

Australia was so confident of winning Saturday night’s Four Nations decider the ARL neglected to take one of the trophies.

Kiwis captain Benji Marshall may have hoisted the Four Nations trophy above his head at Suncorp Stadium but the Bill Kelly Cup which is the traditional piece of silverware (trophies) on offer every time the two nations meet was nowhere to be seen.

An inquiry from NZRL chairman Scott Carter confirmed the trophy had been left under lock and key at the ARL’s headquarters in Sydney.

Carter accepted ARL counterpart Geoff Carr’s explanation of a simple oversight.

The Walter A. Brown Trophy was a trophy awarded to the BAA/NBA champions from 1949 to 1977. When it comes to basketball trophies this is an historic treasure. The trophy was kept by the winning team for one year and given to the winning team of the following year’s finals, unless the previous team won again, much like the NHL’s Stanley Cup trophy, which continues that tradition to this day.

The trophy was originally referred to as the NBA Finals trophy, but was renamed in 1964 after Walter A. Brown, the original owner of the Boston Celtics who was instrumental in merging the BAA and the National Basketball League into the NBA in 1949. A new trophy design was created for the 1977 NBA Finals, although it retained the Walter A. Brown title. Unlike the original championship trophy, the new trophy was given permanently to the winning team and a new one was made every year. It was renamed the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy in 1984 to honor former NBA commissioner Larry O’Brien.

The inaugural winner of the trophy was the Philadelphia Warriors, who defeated the Chicago Stags. The Boston Celtics won 14 trophies the most in league history. From 1957 to 1969, they won the NBA Finals 11 out of 13 times, including eight consecutive wins. The final recipient of the trophy was the Philadelphia 76ers, who defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1983 NBA Finals.

Chicago’s four major sports championship trophies are presented by the Bears’ Richard Dent with the Super Bowl Trophy, Jerry Reinsdorf with the Larry O’Brien Trophy, Mark Buehrle with the World Series Trophy and Joel Quenneville with the Stanley Cup trophy.

The New York Yankees were in town for the first time all season on Friday, and it was “Blackhawks Night” at U.S. Cellular Field.

Curious, to be sure, but the mixed marketing didn’t stop there.

After Blackhawks season-ticket holders marched around the field before the game, the ceremony morphed into a celebration of the “City of Champions.”

Over the last 25 years, the Bears have won the Super Bowl (1986), the Bulls won six NBA titles (1991-93 and 1996-98), the White Sox won the World Series (2005) and the Hawks won the Stanley Cup trophy this year.

Chicago is the only city to win a championship in the four major sports during the past quarter century.

“To me, I feel good about the Blackhawks because that’s the last one,” Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “To bring the trophies of the Bulls, they’re going to need a truck. I think it’s a great thing to see, a great thing to have.”

Representing the Bears, Richard Dent brought out the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Scottie Pippen was supposed to carry out the Larry O’Brien Trophy, but the Bulls’ Hall of Famer got stuck in traffic and didn’t arrive until the bottom of the first inning.

Bulls/White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf filled in for Pippen.

Sox starter Mark Buehrle came out with the Commissioner’s Trophy, and head coach Joel Quenneville represented the Blackhawks with the Stanley Cup.

Quenneville also threw out the ceremonial first pitch, which Buehrle caught.

Scott Reifert, the Sox’ communications director, said championship teams like the Fire (soccer), Wolves (hockey) and Rush (indoor football) were not being slighted.

“We just went with the major sports because we had to draw the line somewhere,” Reifert said.
